Cher begins the film already looking like an ‘after’ photo, so her transformation comes from popping the bubble of her privileged lifestyle. She participates in her teacher’s charity drive, gives away lots of her material possessions, and becomes friends with peers, like stoner Travis, who she had previously excluded. On top of that, realising that her love interest Josh is attracted to brains as much as beauty, she starts watching the news, and helping with her dad’s legal work.

Scenes depicting the fictional Bronson Alcott High School campus including the tennis courts, outdoor cafeteria, and the quad were filmed at Occidental College in Los Angeles. [19] Ulysses S. Grant High School in Valley Glen provided filming locations for the school's interior sets. [20] Other notable filming locations include the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall, Circus Liquor in North Hollywood, where Cher is mugged in her designer dress, and Rodeo Drive, featured in Cher's "crisis" scene as she dejectedly wanders around after a failed driver's test and a confrontation with Tai. I brought my mom around a little bit and we would all spend time together. But I don't think we had any intellectual idea about us being up-and-comers in a big movie because we didn't know we were in a big movie. Maybe other people knew, but I was so innocent and never really paying attention to career stuff at all. I was just doing another job. It was a really great acting part that was different because… Well, first of all I didn't know I was funny. In 2023, Silverstone once again reprised the role of Cher Horowitz in a commercial for Rakuten which debuted during Super Bowl LVII. [64] Spin-offs and adaptations [ edit ] Television [ edit ] If there is one thing that Cher Horowitz, the heroine of 1990s teen-movie classic Clueless, loves, it’s a makeover. It’s her “main thrill in life,” her best friend Dionne points out, “It gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos”. But as Cher plans the transformation of new friend Tai from grungy misfit to Beverly Hills princess, she is blissfully unaware that the person getting the real makeover in this movie is herself.

Nothing can replace Brittany Murphy’s Tai in Clueless. Her role in the movie is so infectious and scene-stealing that it was one thing in particular that I missed in Emma. There’s something about her doe eyes seeming to scream her need for Cher’s friendship that fuels the movie forward. In Emma, Mia Goth’s Harriet Smith is the equivalent. She certainly looks up to Emma for advice on her budding love life and it makes for some entertaining moments. But once you realize she’s supposed to be Tai, you’ll just miss what she brought to her.Twink Caplan: It was this unique part that somebody had to be so many things and had to have a little bit of a foot in another era. And these were young kids. I don’t think they really related that much to Frank Sinatra. … We couldn’t find it and then we finally found the guy to do it. And he was very sexy. In its formative stages, the project eventually known as Clueless went from potential Fox TV show to potential Fox feature film, and then—for a short but frustrating period before landing at Paramount—almost didn’t happen at all. Its path to the big screen is a tale about a filmmaker inventing a very positive character, then dealing with frustration and rejection, but ultimately finding the support to make her movie by staying true to her vision. a b Spellings, Sarah (July 17, 2020). "Creating Clueless's Iconic Wardrobe". Vogue . Retrieved June 5, 2023. Marcia Ross: What often would happen in the sessions is [Amy] might like somebody, but then she wanted to see them again for another role. So somebody I remember, like Jeremy Sisto, might have read easily for three roles.
