About this deal

In this transitional stage, as Aceh moved from emergency to development, the main focus of the World Vision child protection program was the development of ‘Child Friendly Spaces’. Children gathered at these spaces through the day and child protection teams organised play and other activities for the children. Some zones interpreted Child Friendly Spaces as having more of an educational focus for children, some were based around informal play, some had a strong parental influence, some were a safe place for children away from the destruction and some were a place for children to continue to pray and practice their religious beliefs. The challenge for the community was eventually to move from being a child-friendly place to a child-friendly community. Stones may be more appealing to men and boys because they are not as ‘cute’ as The Bear cards. They might also be better suited to upper primary children, adolescents, and adults; clients who have a reasonable vocabulary of feelings and some abstract thinking ability. A client may choose a small stone to represent supportive qualities such as courage, resilience, love and strength. Carrying this ‘talisman’ around, they may feel that its energetic properties are an available resource that they can draw upon in times of need.

Susan recalls studying for her Play Therapy certification when she unexpectedly stumbled onto Innovative Resources. ‘I believe I found them when searching the internet,’ she muses, ‘[but it] has been a while since I started using your resources, so I’m not positive.’ At the time, she had been thinking of working in a hospital, ‘However, I decided I love the excitement of learning found in a school setting when working with children.’

Teaching about the latest events?

This can bypass the familiar, well-worn paths characteristic of rumination. Space is created for authentic felt senses to lead to fresh perspectives, links and insights. There are many ways you can go with this; for example, one stone might represent ‘me when I’m feeling confident’, another ‘shy me’, whilst another might be ‘my anxiety’. Besides exploring self-states/ parts of self, a client can consider what other attributes they sense in their ‘me’ stone. What does its relative size suggest? How about its shape, colour and texture? Symbolically, bloodstone is associated with blood and blood-related bodily processes, like menstruation. I know that in supervision I will be attempting to integrate the tools more regularly.’ With your client holding a stone, invite them to use words to describe the phenomenology as they experience it: the stone’s texture, colours, shape, size, weight, asymmetries, temperature, etc. An extension exercise might be to invite them to expand their focus to include awareness of the effect of gravity on their body and the stone.

The first step to coping with big feelings is identifying them. Conker and his friends experience lots of different feelings throughout the story. While reading you could ask your child to match the correct Emotion Stone to what they think Conker is feeling. You can then talk to them about why Conker might be feeling this way and if they have ever felt similar. When discussing a child’s own feelings, you can also incorporate the concept that friends and adults might have similar feelings in the same situation. Helping your child to identify feelings in others will also allow them to start developing emotional attunement which is important for emotional intelligence and helps children develop empathy. It's a great resource that can be used again and again as part of a range of activities. How can I use these emotions story stones? Crystal prayer or mala beads are worn against the heart or on the wrist to inspire positive feelings, whether it be hope, courage, or peace. They’re a great way for anyone to carry around the healing powers of crystals. When a client begins without a plan or intention, and simply creates a satisfying arrangement of stones, themes may emerge that seem to come up from the deep unconscious. It’s a bit like free-association or dreamwork.

This year, the Cars ‘R’ Us cards have been colourfully displayed in Susan’s office (‘my roads started on the wall!’) and she has also been using The Bears. Students made feelings books using The Bears as their starting point, while other activities have been developed using Strength Cards for Kids. Yet a therapy that ignores the deep human need for creative expression is not going to help a client blossom into their fullest self. This is when natural materials such as stones can be invaluable. There is no ‘wrong’ way to arrange stones, and no ‘right’ way either. Stones can be handled and placed in various ways, and a client can be encouraged to tune in to their inner sense of ‘what feels right’. These opened a whole conversation about how they feelfor each emotion created and how they can handle theirbodies/feelings when experiencing said emotions. The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) notes that complementary health practices such as mindfulness and meditation can promote relaxation and may provide other benefits to people experiencing anxiety and depression and those managing symptoms related to a chronic condition. You may reap some of those same benefits depending on how you use crystals. In other words: we get into ruts and habits of thinking, where the same thoughts churn round and round, washing-machine style. Being creative without any outcome in mind, and then exploring what that’s like – and finding words to communicate this with someone who is deeply attending (the therapist) – can shift us out of the habitual thinking-patterns and into something new and fresh. This can help us get clarity and new ways of understanding what’s going on for us.
