Vee’s son Donny has a heart problem and is unable to contribute financially and her mother is unable to speak following an incident where she collapsed and hit her head after Vee first told her she was pregnant (and un-wed). It's a well-made TV movie, directed by Jay Sandrich, with old-timers Kent Smith and Maureen O'Sullivan joining the cast, clearly calculated as a nostalgia festival for an older audience. I feel that so often that my immediate response to something is a mood, whereas once I begin writing my response becomes more than about mood. Noel's godmother Mattie, the former suffragette with an unusual slant in her view of life, who appears only in the prologue and in Noel's memories, is a superb creation. The method of Johnnie's death isn't even described, strange in a book in which each feeling of each character is painstakingly detailed.

Another book for children, Wed Wabbit, was published in 2017 and shortlisted for the 2017 Costa Book Awards and the 2018 Carnegie Medal. It worked so well because those two characters were flawed and so very, very believable, and because Lissa Evans wrote of them with wit, with empathy and without a hint of sentimentality. The prologue is a miniature masterpiece of serio-comic writing whose quality renders the more banal main story curiously anticlimactic.As days go by, Louise realizes that she needs more from her pathetic life, so when Johnnie finds himself in trouble with the mob, she decides to go with him into "hiding". The Siege has been translated into Russian by Tatyana Averchina, and extracts have been broadcast on radio in St Petersburg. I suppose the author was trying to debunk the idea that everyone in Britain was selfless and united during the war but it rarely rang true for me. I love books that speak to the human condition - life, love, death and everything that comes in between.

I’ve been stepping back and asking myself of late, in talking about unity, if maybe what we need first is for our wounds to heal.Forty-nine years old, a qualified sanitary Inspector, a scrupulous taxpayer, and yet still, by dint of her lacking a property qualification, denied the most basic right of the citizen. We know so little about Vee's mother and son that we can neither empathize with nor understand their erratic behavior. Quietly humorous, the story about ordinary people surviving during the war and the blitz feels very authentic. There is the second wife, who has little interest in the stepdaughter and whose interest in the entrepreneur is primarily in the material comforts he can provide.
