Permethrin 5% w/w Cream is for external use only and should not be applied to broken skin, mucous membranes or near the eyes. Is your child itching but there's no sign of head lice? Find out more about different childhood rashes and how Calpol and other infant paracetamol pain relief might help. What causes head lice? Children should stay off school until the first application of treatment for scabies has been completed.

The limited data available on the use of Permethrin 5% w/w Cream in pregnancy which provide no indication of any risk to the foetus. The amount of permethrin absorbed systemically following a whole body application is extremely low. However, some permethrin may pass the placental barrier. The negative mutagenicity tests and the very low mammalian toxicity suggest that there is minimal risk to the foetus following treatment with permethrin. It is normal for it to take up to 2-3 weeks (and sometimes up to six weeks) for the itch to go completely after scabies mites have been killed. You should, however, see a doctor if the itch persists longer than 2-3 weeks after treatment. This is because sometimes the first insecticide does not work and you may need to use a different one. Leave the cream on the skin and hair for 12 hours (you won't be able to see it) and then thoroughly wash it off. For example, you could apply the cream at bedtime and wash it off in the morning. In patients treated for scabies, itching may persist for up to 4 weeks post-treatment. This is generally regarded as due to an allergic reaction to the dead mites under the skin and is not necessarily indicative of a treatment failure. Head lice are most common in children aged four to 11, are more common in girls than boys, and infestations are often seen at the start of the school year. Some drugs may have Authority Required (Streamlined) status which does not require an explicit approval from Medicare, instead the doctor can use the Authority code found in the published Schedule for a given drug/indication. For the two applications, an adult is likely to need 60 g of cream (two tubes - one tube for each application), older children will require 30 g cream in total (½ tube for each application) and younger children will require 15 g cream in total (¼ tube for each application). Gastrointestinal side effects have included abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea and/or vomiting. [ Ref] General

Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number). In the event of inadvertent eye contamination, the affected area should be rinsed immediately with plenty of water or, if readily available, normal saline. There is an increasing body of data specifically relating to the use of Permethrin 5% w/w Cream for the treatment of scabies in the elderly and in view of these data it is considered that there is no need for any special precautions for use in this age group.

Normally, up to one tube (30g). A few adults may need to use an additional tube for full body coverage but should not use more than 2 tubes (60g in total) at each application. Dee Wright, founder of The Hairforce , a professional head lice removal company, suggests the following for treating mixed-race and Afro hair: Leave the cream on for 8-12 hours for scabies, or 12 hours (overnight) for crab lice. After this time, you should remove the treatment from your skin by having a bath or a shower. If you need to wash your hands during the treatment time, remember to re-apply some cream to your hands afterwards. You will need to use the cream a second time, seven days after the first treatment. Apply the cream in the same way as the first time. Using two treatments, a week apart like this, helps to ensure that all the mites/lice are killed. Lyclear lotion contains dimeticone (a silicone-based substance) and mineral oil. These ingredients kill head lice and their eggs by physically coating, suffocating and dehydrating them.

Nit combing. Once you've detangled and plaited them all, unplait one at a time, apply conditioner and start nit-combing. When you finish nit-combing that section, replait it and move on to the next plait.

Permethrin 5% w/w Cream is a vanishing cream and when rubbed gently into the skin it will disappear. Therefore, there is no need to continue to apply cream to the skin until it remains detectable on the surface. These are usually mild and soon pass. If any continues or becomes troublesome, speak with your doctor or pharmacist for advice If you need to wash a treated area within the 8 to 12 hour period, for example your hands, then you should reapply the cream to that area after each time you wash. The treatment should be repeated after seven days.
