About this deal

Overall, the flashlight feels great in the hand and leaves no cause for concern regarding build quality. is hottest, then one which comes near the end of the runtime where in fact the battery pack is hotter than the head as the cells give their last bit of power. The controls work as we are used to from Fenix: you turn it on and off by pressing the button for a mere second. Interestingly, when the battery voltage gets lower (around 3V), the light switches to the spot emitter, at around 60 lumens. Because i'm always underground down mines and take a lot of photos, i needed a good torch to light the massive cathedral like chambers, the LR40R does the job perfectly.

Fenix tested run times at each output level are achieved by switching the light on at a specific level and letting it run uninterrupted until output has reduced to 10% as per the ANSI standard. Note that the light arrives with the rotary switch set to Lock – just rotate it to Spotlight, Floodlight, or Spot+Flood and you’re off to the races! Over the past year or so I’ve noticed a handful of lights offering both Spotlight and Floodlight modes, though it’s still not something that I would consider to be common. I have had experience with one of those 30,000 lumen monsters (borrowed not bought) and the battery life was paltry (It didn't last the length of the walk). The USB-A port that sits right below the USB-C can also be used to provide power to your devices, such as recharging your phone or other gear.

I will say that based on my tracking of this setup, the charge profile with C to C looks the same as with the graphs above. Spot and floodlight both switched on (no High output on Spotlight mode), the light will downshift to 1500 lumens. It’d take this from being a light with great throw and high output to being a light with great pleasant throw and extremely high output and great temperature…. Since I don’t use the LR50R too often, I end up pulling up the manual every time I go to use that 2-button interface. foregos the usual knurling, and instead has a series of rings and grooves milled into the body that provide a reasonable amount of grip. The torch features a USB-A discharging port which allows it to be used as a power bank for charging external digital devices. It will reduce to 1000 lumens if the spot high mode is also being used, or 1500 lumens if it is just the flood being used. Striking is that this 773 meter is not mentioned in the runtime and output schedule on the back of the box, this is namely the range of the light when it uses all LED lights at full strength.

You immediately notice the narrow beam that will enable you to look for and light up objects in a very targeted way. Fenix recommends their 18650 cells (4 ARB-L18 18650 rechargeable batteries), if you aren’t using the provided battery. Those are button tops, and if you bring your own 18650 cells to the game, you’ll need button tops too. To avoid overheating the temperature protection in the torch will lower the output of the torch if the temperature reaches 60°C using high output modes. The beam distance of the RC40-2016 is a little better than that of the LR40R, but that is mostly because with the RC40-2016 multiple LED lights are concentrated in the hotspot. The single XP-L HI V3 leaves you with a reasonably deep, smooth reflector for the 'throw' of the light. Because I also used these three during the 'outdoor-sessions' I will show you the main differences between the three with the help of some photographs.
