Description

Though the premise of this heartwarming rom-com from Higgins (the Vow series) occasionally strains credulity, its refreshing, well-handled focus on queer women of color finding love and affirmation more than makes up for its shortcomings. D’Vaughn hopes being on the show will help her come out to her family, Kris hopes to find true love. She knew how to draw me into a story from the first page, while keeping my enjoyment level up until the end. They had different reasons for joining the show; D'Vaughn wants a push to come out to her religious family, and Kris is looking to make a real connection with someone outside of her substantial social media following.

This entry was posted in Lesbrary Reviews and tagged afro-latinx, afro-latinx main character, black author, black main character, butch, butch main character, butch/femme, Chencia C.The attraction between the two of them is not only clear to them but the chemistry can also be felt by the reader. However, I just want to state for the record that if anyone in my life dragged me around for SIX WEEKS to help them plan a whirlwind wedding and then said "Psych! I think D'Vaughn and Kris Plan a Wedding should be talked about more in bookish spaces (booktok, bookstagram, book twitter), it is a romance through and through, with characters who feel so deeply about each other from the get-go, loving families coming together, and people who are cheering them on. This is my first time reading about a Black lesbian couple in my twenty-four years of life and ugh I needed this.

A reality TV show where you compete to convince family and friends you're getting married, and then decide whether to say I do or take the money instead. It turned out to be okay for them, because they fell in love at the end, but even then, if I were their family I would have things to say to them. Mentions of the mics and cameras that clarify some issues are provided later in the story, but would have better been served at the beginning of the book.Besides not knowing each other before the show, both of them have different reasons for coming on the show. It follows the same formula and tropes that all romances follow; this trope in particular is the fake to real relationship arc.
