Description

This is the kit for those who are after an off-road focused high powered conversion kit. This mid-drive kits provide powerful ebike performance while maintaining the original pedaling enjoyment. With an integrated speed sensor, this mid-drive motor is compatible with standard bikes. A massive torque output of up to 160NM and a top speed of up to 38mph / 60kph. These motors are regarded as the very best in the EBike world. Extremely quiet and robust. Fully waterproof and internally lubricated within sealed casings. The motor is very small and fits in front of your pedals, and is subtle in appearance. It provides powerful torque, high efficiency and low noise levels. Please read our fitting guide here. If you are riding off-road, regularly riding up steep hills or towing a trailer, a smaller chainring the better. If you are looking for better top speed, then you will want a larger chainring. What is the top speed of a Bafang BBS02? Whatever your reason for wanting pedal assistance — whether it makes cycling more accessible to you and your family, or you think you'll have more fun with that boost - the e-bike market is vast and often requires a large upfront cost. So if you're struggling to find an e-bike that suits you, and already have a bike at home, then you might consider an electric bike conversion kit instead.

You won’t find this much torque, power and versatility in any other conversion kit for the price. Sure, if you can stump up an extra couple of hundred, then I’d seriously consider the BBSHD. But, do you need that much power? In some cases, faults are caused by the way the kit has been installed or misused (eg derestricted, despite our warnings) The compact motor fits subtly in front of your pedals and delivers powerful torque, high efficiency, and low noise. For installation details, consult our fitting guide.

Which motor?

A visit to your local bike shop mechanic is a helpful step in the decision-making process. They can help you determine if your bike is a good candidate for electric technology. Beyond the financial and practical element, the question of 'is it worth it' will also depend on the amount of use you get out of it. E-bikes can be incredibly motivating and enjoyable and if converting your standard bike to electric helps you to ditch the car on a regular basis, then the answer becomes clear. Consumers have a tendency to look away when they encounter a new brand. It's not a bad strategy most of the time but in the electric bike world, including conversion kits, you've got to be more open than that. If you aren't open to names you've never heard of you will find the options limited. A lot of the names you may come across are unfamiliar to you but have a solid history behind them. I found the gears easier than my old bike. Much prefer just having the 8 on one shift, and they are all really smooth. Start Current (%): You should either leave this alone or lower it slightly. If set too high, you run the risk of blowing the controller. Setting this lower is great for a smoother start-up and particularly good if you’re using an internally geared hub.

Apart from some of the electrical issues, my only other complaint would be the pedal assist. This can be fine-tuned using the software, but out of the box, it can have a very on/off feel to it. It’s a shame Bafang didn’t make an upgraded version with a torque sensor, as that would have taken the BBS02 to another level. To date, this feature is only available on their ‘M’ models, which require a special frame for fitment. All motors are reprogrammed using the ‘Hot Rod’ settings for your ultimate performance. If you want to reprogram your controller, then consider buying a USB programming kit. Key information: and relaxing. I'm looking forward to my next ride already, and know I'm going to use it so much more. There are a few things to keep in mind before you buy. First, the product ships from the European Union, so an additional import tax may exist. Second, you’ll want to make sure you have plenty of room on your seat post to connect the motor.

Frequently asked questions

The Bafang BBS02B 750w offers remarkable performance for the price. I’ve yet to come across one person who isn’t impressed by the power level. Depending on gearing, it’s possible to reach speeds of over 30 mph on the flat with electric assistance. Hill climbing is its forte – the BBS02 will eat 25% hills for breakfast! The most simple options are the friction-drive kits, such as the Rubbee X, which place a roller onto your rear tyre. In the example of the Rubbee, you simply need to mount the device onto your seat post, with the roller placed against the tyre. However, more complex systems require the removal of drivetrain components and wheels, and the installation of wiring. These are far from impossible, but they may require some tools and a bit of patience. How much does an electric bike conversion kit cost? In the world of electric bikes, there are a lot of brands you may not have ever heard of. There's been a boom going on for a while, so new brands are popping up all the time. Not only that but Europe, and especially the US, are playing catch up to the trend of electric bikes. You will probably stumble across a lot of unfamiliar brand names. The kits themselves are entirely legal, and fitting them to your bike is equally so. However, the question of legality arises in relation to where you then plan to use your newly powered electric bike. The answer will vary hugely, depending on where in the world you're based, and which kit you choose. Seven years after its launch, the Bafang BBS02B continues to be one of the best e-bike conversion kits available. For the price, there’s nothing to touch it. The nearest competitor is the Tongsheng TSDZ2, and that’s a pussycat in comparison!
