About this deal

The crop at right shows some slight luminance and chroma noise, but it's pretty remarkable for an ISO 800 shot. Image stabilisation, a wide f2 aperture and an oversized sensor all make for superb low-light photography, for example rock gigs in small venues without professional lighting rigs.

The image quality is something to consider, I mean, what can a camera introduced in August of 2009 do these days compared to newer technology? megapixels, and your only options are Drive modes, Compression levels, Flash modes, Self-timer, and Macro mode.I take it on my multi-hour trail runs for nature shots and use it with an AquaPac for wet and underwater situations. Even at ISO 3200, though detail has softened our test images reveal results that arguably, would give lesser compacts shooting at ISO 800 a run for their money, or certainly ones taking images at ISO 1600 if we're being particularly conservative. I think some of that would disappear with more use, but I'm not sure I'd fully master that rear Control dial. The PowerShot G11 should by no means detract from the Canon PowerShot S90, a camera whose features read like a laundry list of demands from technology editors like myself, cleanly wrapped into a small, pocketable format.

Selecting iContrast in strong sunlight we found gave added definition and depth to a shot that could otherwise be left looking a little wishy-washy and hazy if the camera was entrusted entirely to its own devices. More great news is that the effective noise reduction and softening keeps high ISO JPG Normal file sizes down to only about 1MB at full resolution. By selecting WB, just hold the [S] button for a moment, and the large front ring selects A/B (amber/blue) WB trim instantly!DPReview readers have spoken: after two rounds of voting, it's time to announce the winner of our 2023 Reader's Choice Product of the Year award, along with a couple of honorable mentions. Also, exposure and white balance were also generally very good from the S90, though as typical from pocket cameras there was highlight clipping. Telephoto, however, has some chromatic aberration that appears in the center and corners, which can reduce contrast and cause some image softness in very bright areas.

Luckily, the S90 opens up to F2 at its widest setting so if you are indoors in low light you can go up to ISO 800 and shoot at F2 to get shots even at night. The almost 4-year gap between the S80 and the S90, compared with intervals of 6 months to 1 year between prior versions, led to the line being popularly considered discontinued, and thus the S90 as a revival, rather than a strict successor. and the size is so small and thin that you can carry it in your front jeans pocket whenever you go out.The S90's photo quality is on par with the best PowerShots, too, which is to say generally excellent. We spent a lot of time looking at this, enlarging the focus target to get this camera to stop looking at the back wall, to no avail.
