The nozzle can rotate 360 degrees, the reservoir can hold up to 350 milliliters of water, and there are five different cleaning modes, including “pulse” and child settings. When fully charged, the battery ought to last about 15 days or so with regular use; the charging cord is a convenient USB input. The Ion Professional has a few areas where it really shines. The device is smaller than any other water flosser we tested with a 20-ounce tank, and it won’t hog a significant amount of counter space. You can flip between 10 pressure settings—more than double the number most water flossers offer—ranging from 10 to 100 pounds per square inch (PSI), and a timer with a 30-second pacer pauses to signal when it’s time to move on to a different quadrant. We also really appreciated that the pressure dial was able to zero in on precise pressure settings most other wet flossers are unable to. This makes the Turewell suitable for people with sensitive teeth and gums who might otherwise find the standard pressure settings of a flosser too intense for their liking. If you're looking for a more affordable alternative to a pricey water flosser and a thorough clean that's gentle enough for sensitive teeth and gums, the Turewell has the right combination of settings and nozzles to meet your needs. Multiple specialized nozzles are an important consideration, especially for patients with braces," says Dr. Jabbour. "Different nozzles also allow multiple family members to share the same water flosser, which keeps costs down." Alerts and Timers

Still, the total simplicity of blasting out gunky bits of food thanks to the oscillating head means the Spotlight earns its place on our list. Plus, we like that the nozzle is on the smaller side, which makes it a good choice for anyone with orthodontics (especially when you combine that with the fact that the oscillation might help a reluctant water flosser remove more plaque in a shorter period of time). Controlling the Ion is simple, with 10 different pressure settings accessible using a dial on the side of the base. There are no specialized pulse or massage modes, which we didn’t personally miss and didn’t count as an oversight. Despite the ingenuity of this all-in-one concept, the act of flossing with this toothbrush/flosser was not our favorite. Since a toothbrush head is much larger than a water flosser tip, we felt as though we couldn’t keep our mouth closed enough, thus resulting in a bigger mess on our counter. The unit features a large reservoir but is still compact, a rarity in countertop flossing units. It's downright sleek and is designed to look nice on your bathroom counter, in addition to being a solid water flosser. When using a water flosser, you’ll want to fill the water flosser’s tank with lukewarm water — a recommendation given by most brands, especially for those with sensitive teeth or gums, and something we found more comfortable in our personal experience. To reduce a water mess in your bathroom, make sure you are leaning over the sink and put the nozzle in your mouth first, prior to turning on the water flosser. Or, if you have a portable water flosser, many are waterproof, allowing you to floss in the shower. In addition to the standard nozzle, the Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 7000 comes with a comfort nozzle and quad stream nozzle — both with soft rubber tips, which gave a gentle feel along the gums and were completely different than any other nozzles we tested. The comfort nozzle is otherwise like a traditional jet tip, while the quad stream nozzle has an X-shaped opening, so the stream covers a larger surface area. In your mouth, it feels as though four jets are cleaning your teeth at once. While we can’t confidently say that this in fact cleaned our teeth any better, we could feel the increase in coverage along our teeth and gums, and we truly preferred the experience over the regular jet tip. It depends on your oral care needs. If you don't have issues with your teeth and gums, wear oral appliances, or struggle to use traditional string floss, a water flosser might be a luxury addition to your oral care routine. (Not to say it couldn't be worth it, just that you might not get as much use out of it.) But if preventing and removing more than the average amount of plaque is critical to your health, we think a water flosser is a solid investment. Despite being a much more portable option than most, the 200ml water tank offers plenty of space for a comfortable clean without feeling rushed. Looks aside, there are plenty of features to applaud here, including five distinct flossing modes which range in power and intensity, depending on how sensitive your gums are. These include a conventional dental floss mode, in addition to gum massaging programmes, while its 200ml water tank can also hold mouthwash to sterilise and freshen up your breath in the process. Water flossers come in a variety of sizes and price ranges, but their main differences are pretty straightforward: reservoir size, power source, and accessories. Interchangeable tips help you with various oral-hygiene-related tasks as well as letting you share the irrigator with family members. Barbour told us that she feels massage mode has an effect similar to traditional rubber-tip gum stimulator, and while she can see the rationale in including this feature on a water flosser she “hasn’t seen a body of independent research to prove whether this feature is actually effective or necessary.”

Flossing Made Easy - Aqua Flosser PRO has been clinically proven to be up to 5x more effective than traditional flossing in 90% less time. The extra large capacity water reservoir holds 20 oz. of water, which means less filling and more flossing. It includes 4 jet tips, has 2 usage modes, and 10 water pressure levels for a soft or strong micro jet stream. Compare Aqua Flosser PRO to more expensive competitors that aren't nearly as effective. Truth be told, taking care of your teeth can often be a chore. Many have turned to electric toothbrushes with supercharged motors to remove the – admittedly low – effort of the twice-daily routine, but in our eyes, the worst aspect of maintaining a healthy mouth is flossing. Grinding a bit of string between your gums is never an easy nor enjoyable task, but we've found one way to inject a tonne of fun into the process while also cranking up the efficiency, and that's with a water flosser. Yes, you might be rolling your eyes at having suffered through the same advice from your dentist as they espouse the values of flossing, but using a powered tool for the job is your gateway to a healthier, happier, cleaning set of gnashers. Plaque seeker” and “dental implant” tips are meant to get into and remove plaque from difficult-to-reach spaces around implants, crowns, bridgers and retainers — space where, Barbour told us, “maintaining periodontal health and attachment levels around implants is critical.” Waterpik’s plaque seeker tip is covered with soft bristles that can gently and safely be placed against the gumline. Barbour also recommends this tip for beginners who “haven’t used a water flosser before and might have some trepidation about being able to properly adapt to one.” We agree after testing, and particularly liked the gentle feel. We also tested to see how easy it was to fill each reservoir to the maximum amount of water possible, ensuring no water splattered on our countertop along the way. During this process, we also measured the water reservoir to see how much water it could hold, as this has a direct impact on how long one can floss their teeth without having to refill with water.

How we test the best water flossers

Your tolerance for water pressure may be a factor in your decision, as some of the higher-powered products have fewer pressure settings and modes than others—you don’t want something that’s going to cause you pain. A larger reservoir will generally be better if you’re keeping the flosser in one bathroom all the time; it’ll save you having to refill the device midway through flossing. Water flossers aren’t considered an essential dental tool, meaning they’re not designed to replace your toothbrush or even conventional floss. But they can make the process of cleaning your teeth easier, especially if you have dental appliances, dexterity issues or a serious aversion to flossing the traditional way.

Overall Value: Water flossers that left our mouths with that "just left the dentist" feeling of cleanliness rated high on our list, along with products that featured larger reservoir tanks, multiple pressure settings, and simple designs free of confusing assembly steps or instructions. Products that didn't make our list of recommendations missed the mark on one or more attributes: They were too awkward or clumsy to use, didn't offer enough variable pressure, or simply weren't worth their higher price point compared to similar flossers.Noise: Water flossers are typically not quiet devices, and they can be quite noisy at higher levels of power. If you tend to clean your teeth when small children or your partner is sleeping, or if you’re bothered by loud noises, it may be a good idea to search for a machine that’s specially designed to be quiet. However, beyond the oscillating nozzle, there isn't anything special about this flosser, which is why it's not higher up on our list. We found the power button was slow to respond, but it does change color to signify the mode you're using; meanwhile, the reservoir is also a bit small.

Cons: The compact nature of this water flosser means you might have to refill the tank more than once to completely clean your mouth. Burst’s Water Flosser keeps things simple, and that’s exactly what most people should be looking for in a portable flosser. It comes charged and ready to go out of the box, making it perfect for people who can’t be bothered with lengthy setup processes. Burst really shines with its battery life: This device can provide plaque-targeting power for up to 80 days on one overnight charge. That, along with the included waterproof carrying case, is a huge advantage for travelers. Waterpik ION Professional: The Ion is sleek, compact, and easy to use, but we weren't as impressed with its quality. The nozzle attachment fell off mid-use, and our tester struggled to reassemble it correctly. This Aquasonic Aqua Flosser is our best overall because it impressed us with its easy-to-operate on-off switch and how simple it was to toggle between settings mid-use. That's because ergonomics—how comfortable the water flosser is to hold and operate—is so important, and that's just one area where this Aquasonic model really excels. We think it is well designed, with a nice shape to the handle. We put each water flosser through the same testing process. Each was filled with room-temperature water and used five times after meals, cycling through the flosser’s different speeds and nozzles in the process. Flossers were left out on a bathroom countertop for three days at a time to see how well they stood up to normal conditions, including repeated exposure to shower steam and being “accidentally” bumped into. The flossers’ water capacity and features were factored in, along with subjective elements like design and grip comfort. Our expertsMichele Bishop, DDS, founder and owner of Ingram Hills Dental in San Antonio, Texas, and the co-host of the YouTube Channel Tipsy Tooth Talk The Philips Sonicare Power Flosser 3000 also comes with the quad stream nozzle, which covers a wider surface are and is a big selling point in the Philips Sonicare lineup of water flossers. You’ll also find the same two-year warranty and pulse wave technology. The American Dental Association (ADA) advises that the “use of an interdental cleaner (like floss) is an essential part of taking care of your teeth and gums.” But the organization doesn’t recommend any particular method of interdental cleaning, pointing to a 2019 review of the literature on the topic by Cochrane Oral Health that found the evidence for the effectiveness of water flossers (or “oral irrigators”) was “limited and inconsistent”
