Description

Olien provides practical strategies for incorporating physical activity into daily routines and emphasizes the need for a balanced and active lifestyle. If you are unsure of whether this book is for you, Olien’s final comments on page 212 really summarises what this book is about extremely well. Chapter 4: The Hazards of Sedentary Living In this chapter, Olien addresses the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle and its impact on physical and mental health. While he does provide alternative options for some of the products, I would take them with a grain of salt as the advertisement for certain products feels like a sales pitch.

With passion and urgency, Olien exposes the detrimental effects of common household items, from deodorants and cosmetics to cell phones and crayons. If you're looking to safeguard your health, reduce exposure to harmful substances, and make choices that prioritize well-being, "Fatal Conveniences" is an invaluable resource that will guide you on the path to a healthier, happier, and more sustainable future. Therefore, on this basis I just don’t think the credibility is there as I don’t believe enough ‘fact-checking’ has taken place. I understand why the author would be apprehensive and it's his decision how to life his own life but dear god STOP SPEADING MISINFORMATION.I fully support informing the general public of the risks that are not widely known in our environments and making changes to less toxic and more eco friendly products, I can't help feeling like there are better ways to promote the healthy lifestyle shifts than admonishing all things convenient all the time.

This was a very quick read especially since I follow the author on instagram and have seen his Neflix series. Even though most people are not suffering from Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, they are still suffering and feeling the effects of these everyday chemicals, albeit maybe not as intensely. Couldn’t even get through the first chapter; too much wittering on about all these things that are bad for us, eg carpets and furniture fgs, hardly going to just chuck them are we? Thought-provoking, informative and insightful read that helps you to take control of your own well-being and make better choices with achievable solutions and sage advice. As host of the widely popular podcast The Darin Olien Show, Darin explores solutions to life's "Fatal Conveniences" - a segment of the show uncovering modern-day flaws and challenges that may be undermining our health and our environment. The cosmetics and toiletries were of specific interest to me as someone with allergies, and I was shocked how many products I use are in fact really bad. Overall, I believe Fatal Conveniences serves as an eye-opening and informative starting point for those beginning their journey of understanding the presence of toxic products in our everyday lives and seeking alternatives. They use UV filters that have been proven to cause terrible biological effects on aquatic organisms, as well as being proven to bioaccumulate within the food-chain. At the very least, I feel empowered with a greater understanding and mindfulness when it comes to the choices I make, striving for manageable changes in my daily routine. Darin Olien's journey into the world of health and wellness was significantly influenced by a personal tragedy.

With an estimated 55 million adults experiencing chemical sensitivity, the impact of everyday chemicals on our health cannot be ignored.Let this book be the catalyst that sparks your journey towards a healthier, more informed lifestyle.

According to the Environmental Working Group, “the PFAS pollution crisis is a public health emergency. It inspires a shift away from convenience-driven choices toward healthier and more sustainable options. From the FDA, USDA, FCC, EPA, NIH, and so on, there are many agencies that have good people in them trying to do the right thing—however, the system is upside down. Chapter 1: The Dark Side of Convenience In this chapter, Olien introduces the concept of “fatal conveniences” and highlights the inherent risks associated with modern lifestyles.Personally I would be unable to budget changes to even one area of the lifestyle products the author reviews, let alone more than one or all of the lifestyle areas. He discusses the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation on cognitive function, mood, and immune system function. Inspired by his father's struggle with chemical sensitivity, the author takes readers on a journey that is both informative and heartfelt. I appreciate this book is intended for the layperson, but there is no harm in providing a numerical citation system so the citations don’t break up the readability.
