Allowing more light to reach the sensor permits freezing action, handholding the camera in lower light levels, and the use of a lower (less noisy) ISO setting. RF Mount AF Auto Focus Weather Sealing Ultra Multi-Coating Linear Super sonic Motor Beautiful Bokeh 9 Aperture Blades HR Lens ED F1.4 If your current firmware version is lower than the version being offered below, please update your firmware now. TLDR, if you want a 14mm this "tiny" for your DSLR, this is it. All other 14mm's are utterly massive and most are rather pricey. Your next-best option is the Roki-Yang 14mm f/2.4 SP/XP, and it's quite a step up in every regard, from image quality to weight and price. (Still, it beats the Sigma 14 1.8 in the corners in every respect except vignetting!) One other feature to note is the inclusion of the auto/manual focus switch. Often this switch is omitted from cheaper lenses but I appreciate that Samyang included it. Having a tactile switch is very handy instead of diving into the menus for manual focus.

While this lens is not the absolute best available 85mm model, it delivers very good image quality relative to its price. Omitting the optical stabilization system reduces the size, weight, complexity, and cost of a lens. Close focus image quality is reduced modestly, especially in the periphery where lateral CA is increased. The Samyang 85mm F/1.4 Canon RF mount telephoto lens is the first 85mm prime lens with precision manual focus control to be available in Canon RF mount. It sports a new exterior design with a contemporary look that matches and handles well with Canon’s full frame mirrorless cameras. On the EOS R, the Samyang 85mm f/1.4 autofocused rapidly and reliably in both the single-shot and continuous AF modes. While not totally silent – there’s a very low whirr – it’s certainly very quiet.

That angle of view drives focus distance decisions for desired subject framing, and that resulting distance provides the perspective. Another area that impressed me about this lens was the image quality. This lens also has character to it– something most modern lenses are missing. Above: In the spirit of fairness, here’s all three again, all closed to f2.8 to compare the impact of aperture blades. Here the octagonal shape of the old EF 85mm’s aperture blades becomes quite apparent, while the RF 1.2’s nine blades are a little more discrete, but impressively I’d say the RF f2 retains the roundest shape. Lateral chromatic aberration is reasonably well controlled at f/1.4 but can be rather noticeable at narrower apertures. It’s rather worse than in most competing 85mm prime lenses. Distortion: 1.16 I am bet you I am not the only one who thinks this way. We are simply willing to pay good money for that 1 or 2 lenses we would like high end, and f1.8 and f2.8/4 primes and zooms for the rest.

Image Quality

I also thought about upcoming RF 85 f/2 but if I buy this, I feel, I am going to keep thinking about f1.4. As seen in the photos below, it's not a great match for the diminutive Canon EOS RP camera that we tested it with, especially when the large lens hood is attached. It would be more at home on the larger EOS R body, or the upcoming EOS R5 / R6 cameras. In addition, this angle of view is inviting for architecture, street photography, and simply walking around, getting creative with whatever subjects you find.
