The Old Success Inn has been a licensed pub since the 17th century. For years it was independent until it was taken over and protected by the St Austell Brewery. The quay has been used for centuries by local fishermen but was never significant until it became an important centre for importing coal in 1839 after they opened several mines nearby. This trade continued until 1939, when it was superseded by road haulage and rail transport.
