Very well written and certainly an interesting read, but the rote recital of fell running events and legends (and make no mistake, these people are fucking legit) becomes a bit tedious. I needed a shower shoe that wouldn't slip on wet tile and would be squishy enough to protect my sore feet.

The many variations, however, can be grouped into one of 10 basic types depending on their general shape and height in the sky. This happens when, despite the dryness of the lower level of the atmosphere, the mid-level atmosphere is fairly moist and unstable. Just a few too many lists of races held and "3rd place went to Dave Smith" for me, which could have been edited a little.

Ohne ihnen ihre Leistung absprechen zu wollen: nach der zweiten Wiederholung hatte ich das Gefühl, dass sich ihre Geschichten wie ein Laufschuh dem anderen gleichen. Besides altocumulus being higher up in the sky, another way to tell them apart is by the size of their individual cloud mounds. I loved this book – at times it brought goosebumps to my arms and tears to my eyes (and not because of cramp). One of my favorites was when he said women don’t fell run as much because “they’re concerned about not looking elegant enough,- a woman can’t be elegant covered in dirt”. Richard Askwith's journey takes him into a world of forbidding rockscapes, horizontal rain, fear, exhaustion and stunning natural beauty, as well as his own attempt at one of the purest and toughest challenges imaginable: the Bob Graham Round, the sport's traditional test of 42 Lake District peaks in 24 hours.

With personal narrative by one of the participants of fell-running—a sport that little is known about, but one that also boasts mass-participation—this fascinating account of arduous circuits, week-long marathons, and pounding the mountainous trails of the Lake District and Snowdonia is a unique and compelling account of stamina and courage that stretches the limits of belief. They become visible during twilight when sunlight from below the horizon illuminates them to reveal their faint ghostly outlines. Winner of the 'Bill Rollinson Prize for Landscape and Tradition' - Lakeland Book Awards Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award and for the Boardman-Tasker Prize. The ABI can show more detailed changes in cloud-top features, helping scientists assess the potential size and severity of a storm even before it reaches its peak! And when Wendy Dodds, just turned fifty-one, recently did an extended BG of fifty-three peaks, it took her less time than her original BG, twenty-three years earlier - 'and it felt far easier - I just sailed through it. An inspiring insight into one of the oldest extreme sports, and a lyrical tribute to Britain's mountains and the men and women who live among them, this is the definitive story of fell-running. Feet in the Clouds is a chronicle of a masochistic but admirable sporting obsession, an insight into one of the oldest extreme sports, and a lyrical tribute to Britain's mountains and the men and women who live among them.

With temperatures around -50 °C at that altitude, when she miraculously reached the ground she was covered in ice with bruising all over her body from the impact of hailstones in the cloud. Particulary interesting were the chapters about individual "legendary" fell runners, descriptions of actual races run by the author, and the chapter about the infuriating former professional vs. However that is fair enough as the key roots of fell running are the lakes and that's where the author has done most of his own stuff. I had to conclude that this one does- it has inspired me to do more of my running on the hills of the Calder Valley, where I'm from, and the level of personal insight Askwith shows really is commendable. His original objective gave "way to a far greater one: to endure, to strive, and not to yield - no matter how overwhelming the pressure to do so; to keep driving on, defiantly, cheerfully, uncomplainingly, in the face of all reason and sanity; to scorn pain and exhaustion as pernicious impostors; and to prove that an indomitable human will is as mighty a force as any in nature.I have CMT which is a disease that causes great foot pain, and these shoes help the pain a significant amount.

Inspired by the endorphins and sense of accomplishment of hiking solo in the mountains in Scotland, I picked up this book on fell-running (racing up and down mountains at distances beyond "trail running") to read about the next level of adventurousness. Askwith describes the Wasdale, a race over 25 miles of rugged mountain terrain, as having sixty-eight starters with only twenty-six under forty. I think Askwith hits the nail on the head when he states that with a lot of long-distance and endurance running, the battle is in your mind. Cirrocumulus clouds are small, white patches of clouds often arranged in rows that live at high altitudes and are made of ice crystals. You'll recognize them as white or gray patches that dot the sky in large, rounded masses or clouds that are aligned in parallel bands. There are the high, wispy clouds to first appear in advance of a low-pressure area such as a mid-latitude storm system or a tropical system such as a hurricane.
