When Jarvis hisses "I can't help it / I was dragged up / Grass is something you smoke/ Birds are something you shag / Take your 'Year In Provence' and shove it up your ass," it sounds like mustard gas escaping over the trenches in the class war. By the time Different Class was released at the end of October 1995, Pulp, particularly lead singer Jarvis Cocker, were genuine British superstars. What started as a celebration of the British music industry reasserting its influence after a few years dominated by the US grunge scene had morphed into something of a media bandwagon.

From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener Mis-Shapes and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of Disco 2000 ) to the aching ballad Underwear and the startling sexual menace of I Spy, Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound. Language - Regardless of country of origin all tracks are sung in English, unless otherwise stated in our description.

Clever songwriting isn’t biased to any gender, and while several of his peers were content to play up their laddishness, Cocker’s peculiar disposition had him turning heads of both sexes. Similarly, Jarvis Cocker's lyrics take two themes, sex and social class, and explore a number of different avenues in bitingly clever ways. Highly recommended for dancing on tables, drinking vodka, and finding a too-young-for-you boyfriend. The cookies tell us which pages are the most and least popular and show us how people move around the site. Volume 2 of Madness B-Sides "I Do Like To B-Side The A-Side", across 11 hit singles from "Driving In My Car" to "(Waiting For) The Ghost. Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. Formed in Sheffield in 1978, and with enough ex-members to form several more outfits, Pulp had released four albums by the summer of 1995.

Their latest, 94’s His ‘n’ Hers, had been nominated for the Mercury Prize but lost to M People’s Elegant Slumming (to this day: huh? which would go on to become the biggest-selling record of the decade in the UK (thus ultimately winning the ‘war’ with their rivals). When Pulp released Different Class in October 1995, it was at the peak of the Britpop era – less a cultural movement and more a label the music press had slapped on a collection of disparate (though mostly white, guitar-based) British bands infiltrating the charts in the mid-90s. I forgot all about this album I loved as a young teen however I recently began playing it again, and with a new adult ear I was blown away at the passion and social statements evident in all lyrics! For some bands, success comes after years of hard work, playing tiny venues and selling meagre amounts of merchandise to put enough fuel in the tank to reach whatever hellhole’s next on a never-ending tour.
