As the scent wears on, I feel that it becomes even better than the opening act. The berry-like fruits begin to fully emerge and give the cologne a distinctive feel. Nonetheless, they are only playing a supporting role at this stage. For the hefty price this is going for these days, I honestly do not recommend blind buying. There are a lot of great boozy fragrances out there that I would consider over this one for the price. You can get an incredible niche fragrance at retail for 250, even less if you could find it at a discount. But not Pure Malt. I have spend my hard earned money on the whole set with showergel, bodybutter, hair perfume and so on.

As the scent wears on, I feel that it becomes even better than the opening act. The berry-like fruits begin to fully emerge and give the cologne a distinctive feel. Nonetheless, they are only playing a supporting role at this stage. However, Pure Malt never relinquishes its very masculine energy or fall into a trap of being too ambiguous. I found myself constantly trying to get a whiff of this lovely gourmand scent throughout the night that I was wearing it. It was just enjoyable and pleasant to wear. If "re-releasing" old fragrances as new fragrances is going to be a trend for Thierry Mugler (remember Pure Energy) I don't oppose. I would really like to see a Pure Havane Spirit or a Pure Coffee Blend of even a Gourmet of Fragrances (Pure Chilli).

The opening of A*Men Ultimate is very fresh, aquatic-like. I don't get much bergamot. The fresh fades after about ten seconds into a candy sweetness that reminds me of walking into an old five and dime store full of every candy you can imagine, and I like this but hate it at the same time. I do not detect balsam fir, and there is only a very small hint of cocoa in the dry-down. Vanilla dominates the fragrance, but it is a synthetic vanilla, not natural vanilla. I feel like they were aiming for a similar vibe to Le Male or Eros; even the bottle is blue-green like both those. Projection is minimal, sillage (scent trail) seems almost zero, odor life short, but some of the base notes hang on for a whole day but with no projection. Still not quite sure about this one. I smelled this yesterday and if it hadn't been for hearing about this a little from a few Youtubers I would've expected something so different given the stunningly bright electric blue bottle! It seems to me that this is somehow "richer", and more refined and more complex than the original Pure Malt, yet I can't quite put my finger on why I prefer the newer frag. I actually got good longevity with this, it’s hard to remember the details of when I applied and when it faded last night but I’d say 6-8 hours or thereabouts. Update: After wearing this for a while, it seems like 7 hours is pretty standard, for Pure Malt’s longevity. Not a monster performer, but still quite enough.

That was what i felt, however, until just a few weeks ago when I decided to give it another shot and just wore it as an A*Men fragrance with lowered expectations and was pleasantly blown away. Great scent but a bit synthetic (which I don't mind but I know many people do). This could have been a scent from Escentric Molecules. It does smell like bitter amber, to be more precise in aroma-molecule terms: Ambermax and/or Ambrocenide. I'm pretty sure there's tons in this, which are very strong synthetic amber that doesn't only last but also projects like crazy. A fantastic concept. Scotch has always had a historical reputation for class, quality, and style, and it's golden-ambery appeal is legendary. But you have to like patchouli and malt beer too...at least from the smell I find the fragrance successful and not as obtrusive or unpleasant as you might think when you look at this pyramid. To the person that said this is a youthful scent. LOL No effing way! This is 30+, whiskey neat, cigar in the other hand all day. It is very perfumey with incredible technicianing—but is also extremely grounded, bold, pungent, and mildly bitter. However, Pure Malt never relinquishes its very masculine energy or fall into a trap of being too ambiguous. I found myself constantly trying to get a whiff of this lovely gourmand scent throughout the night that I was wearing it. It was just enjoyable and pleasant to wear.

It is a great choice for men who are looking for a signature scent that is both unique and inviting. That being Said...trying them side by side as I am at the moment, I get a slight(and I do mean very slight) difference between them. Malt on the other hand gives you that darker and heavier malt aroma with smokey and fruity undertones. It’s a blend of the fruits, whiskey, vanilla, and some patchouli to roughen things up slightly. Later, it will get smoother and creamier with woody base notes, but up top its a delightful whiskey soaked scent.Thierry Mugler Pure Malt EDT opens with a moderate projection of boozy, sweet, citrus, and coffee notes. The opening is bold, aromatic, unique, delectable, and intense. The citrus, fruity, whiskey, and coffee are the opening noticeable notes. The fruity note comes up as a fruity candy sweet note as opposed to natural fruits. The malt and whiskey are prominent, and further grow as the fragrance dries down, their alcoholic, and boozy nature give the fragrance a unique style, bold, and casual. The bergamot and orange add a sharp, citrusy sweet note but are short-lived, both, but particularly the bergamot, start dissipating soon after the fragrance is applied. The coffee is also noticeable, a blond and delectable touch that contributes mostly as a projecting accord. As the fragrance moves towards its dry down, the amber, musk, and vanilla start developing, adding their sweet notes and making the fragrance feel dry; simultaneously, the patchouli, musk, and cedar develop as support notes adding a light green, musky and fresh woody touch. The musk is inoffensive, it just improves the sharpness and projection of the fragrance. The fragrance has a few but noticeable opening to dry down changes, the opening is fresh, citrusy, boozy, fruity sweet, moist, and with a noticeable coffee note. As time passes, the amber and vanilla turn the fragrance dry and very projecting. The last noticeable change has to do with the initial projection which takes a step up to strong. Once Thierry Mugler A*Men Pure Malt EDT has reached its full dry-down, it can be summarized as a strong projection, sweet vanilla, amber, boozy, malt, whiskey, and coffee fragrance with and green and musky accords. The fragrance feels ambery, bold, boozy, candy-sweet, casual, comforting, delectable, dense, delicious, dry, exotic, expensive, fruity, gourmand, high-quality, imposing, inviting, long-lasting, masculine, modern, natural, nicely-blended, nocturnal, persistent, playful, resinous, rich, seductive, sweet, warm, wild, and very pleasant. The opening is to die for. Rich, dried fruits and waxy, Red Vine licorice soaked in Malt Whiskey. With an earthy patchouli and peat moss underneath that is a signature of the A*Men line. Licorice isn't a listed note, but that's the scent image my mind conjures... Killian Single Malt EDP is a great, sweet, vanilla, fruity plum, boozy whiskey-like, and resinous fragrance. Pure Malt Creation is not just a whisky imbued fragrance, it is one which carries caramelized fruit, milky vanilla, honey and coffee, all served on a sandalwood table strewn with various leaves. When I first breathed it in (one does not lightly sniff this, impulsively you will find yourself engulfing it in), my mind shuddered. It seemed like the epitome of a rich, complex, yet entirely modern fragrance - and one which does not get too 'fussy' or perfumey. It has tremendous richness and depth - possibly more than the original - and definitely does suggest high quality and good materials. Right away I was hit by a familiar scent but I couldn't place it at first. I knew I had smelled it before. Then I realized it reminded me exactly of Bentley for Men Intense - almost to the T. The whiskey scent is super forward and throughout. I didn't really care for it as much with Bentley but with this I love it for some reason. Maybe more of the patchouli / earthy tones and less overly 'sweet' booziness. This also seems more refined and less cloying. I still have a decant left of Bentley and yep, I like Nebular a lot more.
