On 24 January 2014, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency was noted, in a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation story, as preparing to stop the sale of Marmite, as well as Vegemite and Ovaltine, in Canada because they were enriched with vitamins and minerals which were not listed by Canadian food regulations. The agency said the products were not a health hazard. [38] Add a teaspoon or two of Marmite to meaty stews, Bolognese or French onion soup to add a deep, savoury umami flavour Similar products include the Australian Vegemite (whose name is derived from that of Marmite), the Swiss Cenovis, the Brazilian Cenovit, the long-extinct Argentinian Condibé, and the German Vitam-R. Marmite in New Zealand has been manufactured since 1919 under licence, but with a different recipe; it is the only one sold as Marmite in Australasia and the Pacific Islands, whereas elsewhere the British version predominates. Preheat the oven to 220°C, fan 200°C, gas 7. Put the sliced bread on a large baking tray and toast in the oven for 25-30 minutes, turning halfway, until very well browned. Chop into large cubes. Marmite ( / ˈ m ɑːr m aɪ t/ MAR-myte) is a British savoury food spread based on yeast extract, invented by the German scientist Justus von Liebig. It is made from by-products of beer brewing ( lees) and is produced by the British company Unilever. Marmite is a vegan source of B vitamins, including supplemental vitamin B 12. A traditional method of use is to spread it very thinly on buttered toast. The brewed yeast extract adds depth to this hot tangy soup. Served with a dry white wine, this is a showstopping starter or light main. Gabbatt, Adam (13 October 2016). "Marmite: Americans wonder what's all the fuss over divisive British spread?". Because of the local product named Marmite, European Marmite is sold by the name " Our Mate" in Australia and New Zealand. New Zealand Marmite uses the name "NZ-Mite" elsewhere. They can sometimes, though, be made from clay. Clay ones should have just water simmered in them for 12 hours, which is then discarded, before their first use with any food. After using clay ones, wash them with just hot water, never soap. Cath Kidston, appearing on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs programme during April 2010 described her shops as provoking a 'Marmite reaction': "People either love it and want a little bit of it very much, or want to stab us." Currently, the main ingredients of Marmite are glutamic acid-rich yeast extract, with lesser quantities of salt, vegetable extract, spice extracts and celery extracts, although the precise composition is a trade secret. Vitamins added for food fortification include riboflavin, folic acid, and Vitamin B 12. [24] Vitamin B 12 is not naturally found in yeast extract, but is very important for vegans who are at risk of deficiency. Marmite should be avoided if a person takes a MAOI antidepressant, such as phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate), as yeast extracts interact adversely with these types of medications due to their tyramine content. Her act wasn’t mentioned in the first historical accounts in the 1600s; only in songs which started to appear in the 1620s was there mention of a marmite. But a will in 1676 drawn up by one of her grand-children mentions a “ pot dit de l‘Escalade (…) le tout d‘estain gravé et de la façon de Pierre Royaume, mon aïeul” (“a pot said to be from the Escalade, engraved in the manner of Pierre Royaume, my ancester”). The pot was given to the arsenal in Geneva, where it was on display until the French under Napoleon took it away in 1814, and it vanished from history. Is this the pot that had been thrown? Was there really a pot at all, or was it other things such as stones that were thrown? And who actually did the throwing: Catherine, or a servant? By 1912, the discovery of vitamins was a boost for Marmite, as the spread is a rich source of the vitamin B complex; Marmite is a perfect partner to cheese – add a twist to Welsh Rarebit, mix into cheesy puff pastry palmiers, or bake some cheese and Marmite sconesThe CFIA later specified that these specific items had been seized because they were not the versions that are formulated for sale in Canada and which satisfy all Canadian food regulations. Canadian versions of Marmite and the other products would still be permitted to be sold in Canada. [39] South Africa [ edit ]

On 2 May 2022, Marmite Truffle was launched and sold exclusively in Sainsburys, along with Marmite 'Dynamite', a chilli-flavoured Marmite spread. The Marmite Truffle was marketed with a variation of the 'Love it Or Hate It' slogan designed to make it sound more sophisticated: "One either loves it or considers it utterly vulgar". During the 1930s, Marmite was used by the English scientist Lucy Wills to successfully treat a form of anaemia in mill workers in Bombay. She later identified folic acid as the active ingredient. [10] Marmite was used to treat malnutrition by Suriya-Mal workers during the 1934–5 malaria epidemic in Sri Lanka. [11] Housewives were encouraged to spread Marmite thinly and to "use it sparingly just now" because of limited rations of the product.
