As a memoir it reads somewhat like a history book, not as bad as some, but still a history book, so I didn't love that. I'll let her tell her story and the story of those around her. This is one of the most disturbing stories I've read because it isn't muted through the gauze of being "historical fiction". This is a real person who lived through horrible events. Sadly, this kind of thing isn't over and I'm not sure it will ever be over. The story is beautiful though, hearing Tova Friedman's success in living a full life despite all that happened to her and those around her.

A ninety-two-year-old former lawyer asked octogenarian Tova Friedman, “have you ever heard of Auschwitz?” while uncovering a tattoo on his forearm. Whereupon she rolled up her left sleeve, revealing A27633 – and together they wept as they shared stories of their losses and triumphs.I challenge anyone to read it without being moved to tears. I cried more than I have for a long time. And yet in no way is this a morbid, self-pitying or depressing read but a real story of survival against all odds and a message of great hope.

I didn’t wake up in Auschwitz one day. As Malcolm said, it took 20 years for this deterioration of the human behavior. First, the books were burned, all the literature, everything, right? Everything was burned. And somebody once said that people who are capable of burning books are eventually capable of burning people.
