Description

Use either 3M™ Flexible Plastic Filler for plastic-like performance and excellent sanding and feather-edging, or use 3M™ Plastic Filler.

Thoroughly clean the bumper inside and out. Any dirt or grease will stop the filler bonding properly and ruin the appearance of the repair. Allow to dry and wipe down with solvent wipes, which are usually included in the kit. Rigid PVC strips are manufactured from a different material to our flexible plastic strips and we encourage you to request samples if you are unsure which material to choose. We have not specifically saught FDA (or similar) approval for this resin system so if you were to make these plates commercially then you would either need to make a plate using this resin system and then have it tested and approved safe for food use or use a different resin system that has specifically been approved for food use. Mixed and cured fully and properly the resulting plastic should be stable and non-toxic but testing would be required to prove this.

PVC strips with square and round edges

Sand the repair area level, first with 80 grit sandpaper and then with a fine grain sandpaper to smooth it out. If needed, apply another light layer of filler over any gaps or dips to restore the original contours. To finish the plastic bumper repair and prepare for the primer, the use of a plastic filler product is recommended. Use either 3M™ Flexible Plastic Filler for plastic-like performance and excellent sanding and feather-edging, or use 3M™ Plastic Filler. Epoxy is sensitive to low temperatures so we would not attempt to try and cure the resin at very low temperatures such as below 15 °:C. At those temperatures, the cure time will be lengthened considerably.

Choosing the correct plastic strip

After 5 minutes shape tab using 3M™ Cubitron™ II Roloc™ Fibre Disc 80+ / 180+ and create a new fixing point to restore original appearance. Apply activator (if applicable). If you are using an activator, apply it to both surfaces unless otherwise indicated. Wait until it has dried completely, then proceed with the adhesive. Most of our flat plastic strips have square edges, but we also have a few sizes with round edges. This means that two of the edges of the plastic strips are slightly rounded. Square edge plastic strips s plastic repair process allows you faster repairs by using the Instant Plastic Repair patch, cutting the time of the repair as you don't need to wait for two areas of adhesive to cure. It depends on whether you choose rigid plastic strips or flexible plastic strips as to how bendable the plastic strip will be.

Once hardened, finish the sanding with wet fine grit sandpaper for a really smooth finish and wipe away any dust. Apply 3M™ VHB™ Surface Cleaner or 3M™ General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner using 3M™ Professional Panel Wipe to clean the area. Allow to dry completely. If necessary, 3M™ Superfast Plastic Adhesive can be painted using the usual paint process for plastic parts or specific bumper paint in spray.

Choosing a repair kit

Prepare surfaces. Surfaces should be close fitting (pre-fit before joining), free of residue, and dry. Slightly roughen smooth surfaces to improve results.

Clean the damaged area with a soft cloth (i.e. 3M™ Professional Panel Wipe and a suitable degreaser). Can be used from 15 to 30°C although pot-life and cure time will be affected significantly. Recommended working at an ambient of 20-25°C. Firstly, an explanation as to what uPVC actually means. PVC is an abbreviation for ‘polyvinyl chloride’ and ‘u’ is an abbreviation for ‘unplasticised.’ Therefore uPVC means the material is unplasticised polyvinyl chloride. Remove the masking tape and sand down the damage at the front to make the area a little low and create a rough surface for bonding. Apply bonding liquid if supplied. Clean the area inside and outside using 3M™ VHB™ Surface Cleaner or 3M™ General purpose Adhesive Cleaner applied with a 3M™ Professional Panel Wipe.Depending on the nature of your project you need to consider the width of the plastic flat strip that you need. The smallest width of plastic (PVC) flat bar strips range is 6mm and the widest is 142mm.
