About this deal

HDMI over Ethernet is a technology that allows users to extend HDMI signals over long distances using Ethernet cables. It is a method of transmitting audio and video signals over a network. It involves sending HDMI signals from a source device, such as a Blu-ray player or computer, to a display, such as a TV or projector, through an Ethernet cable. The HDMI interface has evolved over the years, with new versions ( HDMI 2.1 is the latest) bringing support for new audio and video technologies such as 3D, 4K, 8K, HDR and 4K/120Hz, to name but a few. Plenty of products other than TVs also offer eARC connectivity. Onkyo and Pioneer were the first to offer eARC updates on select AV products such as the Onkyo TX-RZ830, Integra DRX-5.2, Pioneer SC-LX502 and Pioneer VSX-LX503 AV receivers. After all, Ethernet-enabled HDMI cables allow audio, video, and network data transmissions from the primary source to IP-based smart media devices with zero compromises in quality. Though all of it seemed practical in marketing terms, only a handful of devices managed to put HEC to fair use, and not even the ones available domestically. Reasons why Ethernet over HDMI didn’t Take Off When it comes to choosing an HDMI over Ethernet extender, there are several key considerations to keep in mind. Here are some top factors to consider:

Resolution: The resolution of your HDMI signal is another key factor to consider. Make sure the extender you choose can support the resolution you need, whether that’s 1080P, 4K, or something in between. An HDMI over Fiber extender uses an optical fiber cable to transmit the data to reach a much farther distance. You could use an HDMI over Fiber extender to extend the connection up 1,000 to 3,300 ft (300 to 1000 meters) for 4K @ 60 Hz. Or perhaps your smart TV is using a built-in video app such as Netflix, Disney+ or Prime Video. Either way, you don’t want to use your TV’s speakers for audio – you’d rather hear everything played through a soundbar or AV receiver instead.

Interestingly enough, HDMI Audio Return Channel, the feature most soundbars and television sets use for audio, uses the same pins as HEC. In some cases, these two are combined into one term – HEAC – but it’s not very common. In short, an HDMI cable that is labeled as High Speed or ARC compatible is also HEC compatible. On paper, HDMI eARC also makes the handshake between compatible devices much smoother and negates the need to activate HDMI CEC (which doesn’t always work properly) - so operating multiple products shouldn’t require any extra steps to get things up and running. eARC is the same, it’s been available since HDMI version 2.1, but you won’t need to upgrade the cable if it already supports the other features or is labeled as High Speed. eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) an upgraded version of ARC that has much higher bandwidth and can support Dolby True HD as well as other audio streams, it’s mainly used for home theaters. Any Uses for Ethernet over HDMI?

What this does is simplify the number of controllers you will need to manage your system. A video matrix switch, also called a crosspoint switch, is a type of switch that connects multiple inputs to multiple outputs and can be configured to combine supported types and numbers of inputs (e.g. HDMI content player) and outputs (screens). Each input on the switch can be routed to any output source or receiver, or the same input can be routed to all outputs, or any combination in between. For example, an 8 x 8 matrix switch can route 8 inputs to 8 outputs, 1 input to 8 outputs, or any combination up to 8. This eliminates the need to manually move cables to display video from different sources on different screens. It is most commonly used now with HDMI video. It is true that you can find ethernet being used in home applications, but for the most part, all devices use WiFi. This is one of the main hurdles HEC had to overcome and, for the most part, didn’t. There is one area where HEC was implemented, although in a much different way. This is the reason we see ethernet included in most HDMI cables produced today. Best Uses of HDMI Ethernet Channel/HEC Connectivity As part of the process, you should consider enabling HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), so you can turn your TV on and control the volume on your soundbar or amp without the need for multiple remotes. A word of warning, though: turning HDMI CEC on can have some unwanted AV side effects, so you might want to experiment first.
