Mother of Tears (Italian: La Terza madre, literally The Third Mother) is a 2007 supernatural horror film written and directed by Dario Argento, and starring Asia Argento, Daria Nicolodi, Moran Atias, Udo Kier and Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni. With help from the assistant curator Giselle ( Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni), Sarah opens the box and finds the tunic. Big Bad: Mater Lachrymarum is the titular Mother of Tears, the one responsible for all of the chaos in Rome, and plans to spread that chaos across the world. Tenebrarum is perhaps referring to Suspiria's finale, during which Mater Suspiriorum is killed and her home eventually burns to the ground.

According to Jessica Harper, "the witch was a ninety-year-old ex-hooker Dario had found on the streets of Rome. Sarah meets an exorcist, Father Johannes (modern horror forefather Udo Kier), who explains much of this mystery. Sarah arrives too late to save her boss (who is being disembowelled by the monsters) and starts to flee the museum. Markos is depicted as an ancient, disfigured, centuries-old crone maintaining control over the coven and seeking to acquire a new, younger body as her current one is riddled in leprous sores, tumorous growths and immobile infants' limbs growing out of her own.Also at Cannes, Medusa's CEO Giampaolo Letta was quoted by Anderson and Gierasch as saying "This is going to be vintage Argento. It also introduces a more clear distinction between good and evil witches, and an intriguingly morally-ambiguous faction of alchemists too. She is also known as The Black Queen; any mention of Helena Markos being one of the Three Mothers would not be made until Inferno three years later. She uses this to avoid a police detective, though she is forced to kill a witch, Katerina, who catches and corners her on the train.

With help from the assistant curator, Sarah opens the box and finds the cloak, a dagger, and three statues representing the three witches. With the followers crushed as the catacomb collapses, Sarah and Enzo struggle back above ground and laugh in horror and relief. She heads for Marta's house and discovers that Lachrymarum's minions have murdered Marta and her lover. However, the two become separated, and Enzo is tortured alongside the alchemist and his assistant, who dies after his arm is chopped off by one of Mater Lachrymarum's minions.

Yes, like “Inferno” (1980), the ending of this film is a bit silly and anti-climactic ( although the flooded crypt tunnel could almost have come from Argento’s 1985 film “Phenomena”) but “Mother Of Tears” feels like a much more focused film than “Infermo” did. Dubbing the soundtrack into the Italian and English language versions of the film was finished on 5 April 2007. As excessive and ketchup laden as predecessors Suspiria and Inferno, Dario Argento's Mother of Tears completes the trilogy with the same baroque grandeur and soggy 1970s sensibilities. The day after the Cannes screening, on 18 May at 3:45 pm, co-scripter Jace Anderson and actress Coralina Cataldi-Tassoni were on The Third Mother discussion panel at Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors convention on the West Coast. There are some brilliantly startling jump scares and a “turned up to eleven” version of Dario Argento’s famous gross-out gore effects and cruel ultra-violence that will make even the toughest horror movie fan wince ( and he really does go for maximum shock value here!

Cradle of Filth frontman Dani Filth recorded a song with Simonetti, Mater Lacrimarum, for the soundtrack of the film. In 1895, she founded the Tanz Akademie ("Dance Academy" in German), a school for dance and the occult sciences, in the Black Forest outside Freiburg, Germany. She heads to Marta's house, but once again Mater Lachrymarum's minions strike and Marta and her lesbian lover are murdered.There’s also the kind of supernatural/occult paranormal horror you’d expect from a film in this series too. In his earlier films Suspiria and Inferno this world is more or less confined to the houses of the witches but in Mother of Tears it extends to the whole city of Rome bringing with it sporadic violence and chaos. Although Nicolodi mentioned her version of the script again in an interview for Alan Jones' book, Profondo Argento: The Man, the Myths and the Magic, it was not used in whole or part for Mother of Tears. Though Mater Suspiriorum and her sister Mater Tenebrarum are now dead, their sibling Mater Lachrymarum has emerged from the shadows to bring about the second age of magic, with the fall of Rome as her coming-out party. The soundtrack was released around the same time as the film's Italian wide release (31 October 2007) by Edel Music.

As classic horror movie fans know, Dario Argento’s timelessly brilliant 1977 art-horror masterpiece “ Suspiria” was actually the first part of a trilogy. She uses this to avoid a police detective, though she is forced to kill a witch who corners her on the train. Set in Rome this time, violent goings on start happening in the city as well as strange, unexplainable things that seem to be connected to the occult and something that may involve scientist Asia Argento. Detective Enzo Marki ( Cristian Solimeno), the police officer who has been tailing Sarah, joins her to venture into the catacombs where Mater Lachrymarum's cult lurks. This is the third and final installment in his "Mother Trilogy," which he began 30 years prior with Suspiria (1977) and Inferno (1980).Guts and gore are Dario's forte and, amongst many instances of horrific death, you have a FULL Vlad-style impaling with an uncomfortably long spear of my favourite actress in the film, plus a strangulation by intestines, and the throwing of a baby off a bridge. While the narrative comes frightfully close to unravelling at times, this is a thrill ride that holds you to the end.
