Tunnel Tents In addition to a nice aerodynamic fly, we also look for a good amount of guylines attached to it, as these are ultimately what give a tent’s structure its strength. There’s no better example of a windproof and well-secured rainfly than the Mountain Hardwear Trango 4 we recently tested, but tents like the North Face Wawona, Big Agnes Bunk House, and MSR Habitude 6 are all good examples of how a good rainfly and tough guylines allow a big tent to survive in the wind. The fly isn’t particularly difficult to set up, but because it uses its own pole and needs to be staked/guyed out to function properly, it does add another step to the process over comparable models such as the Nemo Aurora Highrise. The Wawona definitely wasn’t the only tent in our test with a pole supported vestibule though, and considering it’s probably our favorite vestibule of the bunch, it’s hard to fault it here. Our first setup took about 15 minutes total (learning process included), and we were able to shave it down to about 10 after a little practice.

This is also one of the easiest pitching tents we’ve ever used, and Marmot’s combination of clear color coding and a linked pole system makes the Tungsten an absolute breeze to pitch by yourself. Ventilation is also a highlight here, and the rainfly’s double vents combined with an abundance of mesh in the canopy keep this tent breathing easily, even in heavy rain when it’s all zipped up.
