Relationships and love are on the table when a travelling circus arrives in Corfu - between banding together to drum up ticket sales and partaking to replace disgruntled acts. Leslie is thrown out, which leads to a life of crime after being taken in by two local thugs (Manolis Emmanouel and Vangelis Diamantis). The family's concerns over Sven's true intentions are brought to light when Louisa realises that Sven's romantic feelings for her are merely a ruse to hide his homosexuality. The Durrell family left Corfu as World War Two began, and in 1943, Durrell served the war effort by working on a farm. While Larry languishes in despondence following the antipathy-inducing news of Aunt Hermione's impending arrival – and the suspected breaking of his leg – Louisa is determined to relieve Leslie of at least two of his three girlfriends, but this falls into difficulty when different members of the family prefer a different girl – and invite each to tea at the same time.

Citing the show as its "best rating new drama of the year and its highest rating new show since September 2014", ITV recommissioned the show for a second series on 15 April 2016. Louisa's worries her previous "birds and the bees" talks with Leslie were insufficient are confirmed when she discovers he has impregnated Daphne, one of his three girlfriends. Over his lifetime he presented many TV shows, and wrote thirty-seven books, including My Family and Other Animals and its two sequels, Birds, Beasts and Relatives and The Garden of the Gods. Durrell featured in the United Nations' Roll of Honour for Environmental Achievement in 1988, becoming part of 500 people ("Global 500") to be given this honour in the period 1987–92. Meanwhile, Margo earnestly delves into her new vocation of beauty and hairdressing - with mixed success - as Leslie rediscovers his hobby for firearms to distract from longing for Daphne, and Gerry begins planning for a zoo, with his primary efforts on training an owl that becomes a spectacle for the houseguests.

In 1978, Durrell started the training centre for conservationists at the zoo, or the "mini-university" in his words. Meanwhile, the family's exposure to a more genial – and multiple-suitored – Aunt Hermione ends curtailed, with her death eliciting baseless fears of her bedroom being haunted by her "restless soul" and that the family should slay a goat as a sacrifice. If I had felt that perhaps the standard might be lower than the scorpions-in-the-matchbox scene which fixed My Family and Other Animals place as the best memoir I’d ever read, then I was proved wrong on more than one occasion ( “How do you explain a bloody great bear in the drawing room? His first book The Overloaded Ark was a huge success, causing him to follow up with other such accounts. Durrell started writing humorous autobiographical accounts to raise money with encouragement and assistance from Jacquie [6] and advice from his brother Lawrence. On the surface, the three books in the collection are mass market rubbish of the same ilk as James Herriot's animal stories.

Interesting to note that as the series progresses less is devoted to descriptions of animals and more of a focus on his family instead. Recomendado para todos os que ansíen viaxar a través da lectura a unha illa paradisíaca no mar Mediterráneo e coñecer por igual os seus habitantes humanos, animais e mesmo vexetais. My Family and Other Animals is part of what's known as the Corfu trilogy, all of which are about Durrell's early experiences keeping animals and his family's time on the island. These books tell the story of Gerald Durrell and his family’s five year stay in Corfu, and their popularity is pretty clear from the As Seen On Masterpiece sticker on the cover. Durrell was a regular contributor to magazines on both sides of the Atlantic, including Harper's, Atlantic Monthly, and the Sunday Times Supplement. In the United States, PBS began airing the show, retitled as The Durrells in Corfu, on 16 October 2016 at 8pm. The animals that he brought back were sold to London Zoo, Chester Zoo, Paignton Zoo, Bristol Zoo, and Belle Vue Zoological Gardens. Durrell visited Madagascar in 1990 to start captive breeding of a number of endemic species like the aye-aye. These include Ceylonthelphysa durelli, or Durrell's freshwater crab, Benthophilus durrelli, or Durrell's tadpole goby, and Kotchevnik durelli, a species of Russian moth.

Jersey brought out stamps honouring the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust and Mauritius brought out a stamp based on a race of a rare gecko named after Durrell. One book of anecdotes flows naturally on from another - and he could have written more, since there is no real conclusion to "The Garden of the Gods".
