About this deal

The dust wrapper, illustrated by the author, has some mild curling to the top and tail of the spine. On one hand this did make me wonder if Briggs only had one trick to play and he had already done it but I did try to be fair and watch it as a film just on its own merits.

The BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates the body of work of an author or illustrator who has made an outstanding contribution to children's literature. When he began to draw, he was interested in ‘above all, what the figure was doing and thinking and feeling … the illustrator is interested in the storytelling aspect of the picture’. As the sun rises the next morning, Tilly wakes up to find the windows open and the Star Bear's constellation fading. His graphic novel Ethel and Ernest, which portrayed his parents' 41-year marriage, won Best Illustrated Book in the 1999 British Book Awards. In 2000, it won the Golden Butterfly Award for the best short film in the international cinema competition of the 15th Isfahan International Film Festival for Children and Youth in Iran.Included in the exhibition are works from Briggs’ pioneering titles as well as drawings, hand-lettered typography and page designs from his earliest commissions to The Puddleman (2004). His Snowman may fly across our screens each Christmas day, but in the book there is no Father Christmas, no sleigh, and certainly no figgy pud. Norris the bear is patient, and prepared to wait for life's pleasures, such as the plorringe hanging from the tree, not quite ripe. It's interesting that there was a film version of the book, that added parts, and now we would love to see a book version of the film. Briggs was a commended runner-up for the 1964 Kate Greenaway Medal ( Fee Fi Fo Fum, a collection of nursery rhymes) [17] [a] and won the 1966 Medal for illustrating a Hamilton edition of Mother Goose. I suspect that Briggs is probably saying something about intimacy here and ageing, but I’ll need to reread it to really consider this. When she describes the bear's latest antics to her parents they think he's a figment of her imagination - but is he? He has black hooked claws and huge yellow teeth; but his white furry coat is warm and soft and Tilly decides he's the cuddliest thing in the whole world. It begins in 1928, with two wordless pages, as a lady’s maid unwittingly waves a duster at a passing cheery cyclist, and their married life together goes on to register social changes, world events and technological progress up to the start of the 1970s.

His books have inspired, challenged and entertained readers around the world, and some have been the source of controversy. Like The Snowman, the film relies only on music and action to convey the story, although for the American version, Judi Dench narrates the film. Pen scribbling filling in the letters in the title on the front cover and ISBN bar code circled on back cover.

You could also see the odd moment when the polar bear facts that Tilly was relating to her parents proved our suspicions that the bear did exist. The pair move to a wide open park area where they meet the Star Bear, which is a bear shaped constellation (like The Great Bear) and the trio embark on a tour around London, showing a wide variety of notable landmarks such as Nelson's Column, and bringing a display of Christmas angels to life with a Father Christmas display also coming to life. The final page shows an already-maturing Ug, painting animals on the cave wall, and asking ‘Things WILL get better … won’t they? Briggs went on to become one of the country's popular author-illustrators, with titles in the 1970s such as Father Christmas, Father Christmas Goes on Holiday, Fungus the Bogeyman and, of course, The Snowman. So it may well be The Snowman with more polar bear but it is still a good short film for the family at Christmas time.
