Description

These digitally enhanced posters are professionally printed with fade resistant inks on to a thick 300gsm silk poster card. His most famous posters were for household products, theatre productions and railway companies, including 'Skegness is So Bracing', commissioned in 1908 for the Great Northern Railway. It was an outstanding poster for its time, because most Victorian and Edwardian posters were restrained and factual. It is regarded as one of the most famous holiday advertisements of all time and is believed to have influenced the success of Skegness, the 'Fisherman' is now the mascot for Skegness and celebrated his 100th birthday in 2008. The fisherman has been replaced by a flame-haired woman in a red bathing costume, who (it would) appear has had a few sherries.

Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. His impressionistic landscapes pay homage to big skies and wide, open beaches, but his inclusion of numerous figures strolling or playing on the sand give an insight into the seaside of the early-Victorian era, when the railways were opening up new destinations, but towns were still undeveloped. In 1936, Hassall was invited to Skegness for the very first time by the Skegness Advancement Association.

Hassall’s immense workload meant he often recycled ideas and many illustrations seem to mirror his own family life. To deliver them to you as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible, we send them out by Royal Mail 2nd class post (unless, of course, you’ve paid for another postal service). Explore the pleasures and pastimes of the British seaside through these classic posters, charting the history of holidays at home.

Hassall’s image, a perfect partner to the slogan provided by Great Northern Railway, boiled the resort down to three key elements: sea, sand and that bracing fresh air. We also use different external services like Google Webfonts, Google Maps, and external Video providers. In the same year, he had two paintings accepted for exhibition at the Royal Academy, but earned his bread and butter by drawing for illustrated magazines such as Tit-Bits, The Graphic, Moonshine and, in particular, The Sketch. As we gaze upon this image today, we are reminded of Skegness' timeless allure and how it continues to captivate generations with its unique blend of seaside beauty and nostalgic charm. This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. It was commissioned by the then Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to use their service to take them on their seaside breaks to Skegness. Hassall’s now-famous Jolly Fisherman poster, coupled with the strapline “Skegness is SO bracing” promoted the first excursion to Scarborough from King’s Cross in London. Dating back to the 1910s, this Donald McGill creation captures the essence of British coastal humor.

The latter became Hassall’s second home following their first holiday there in 1908; in the 1920s, he designed a poster for the town, of a little girl in a large bonnet on the beach.William Frith was more interested in painting modern life than landscapes, but his first big success, Life at the Seaside (Ramsgate Sands) (top) exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1854, is one of the greatest of British seaside paintings. If John Hassall was king of poster artists, then Donald McGill was undoubtedly king of the saucy seaside postcard. The works of British poster king John Hassall remain a breath of fresh seaside air, says Lucinda Gosling. Some of the technologies we use are necessary for critical functions like security and site integrity, account authentication, security and privacy preferences, internal site usage and maintenance data, and to make the site work correctly for browsing and transactions. The first woman to be elected to the Royal Academy, Laura Knight honed her craft in the artistic colonies of Staithes in North Yorkshire and Newlyn in Cornwall.
