Getting into the world of recording can seem daunting, but there’s never been a better time to do it. Then I put the CL-1 back inline, reduced the Mackie’s gain to match the signal level in Pro Tools, and recorded ambient noise again.

An essential tool for recording into a DAW interface, performing live on stage, producing a podcast, using long cable runs in the studio, miking soft sound sources and using noisy or low gain preamps. An easy-to-use, compact solution for common audio problems faced by engineers and performers while in the field or the studio. The CL-1 is ideal for recording into a DAW interface, performing live on stage, producing a podcast, using long cable runs in the studio, miking soft sound sources and using noisy or low gain preamps.Main FeaturesStudio quality USB microphoneCompatible with Mac and Windows computers as well as iOS devices (with adaptor NOT included)Headphone monitoring outputComes with Tripod desk stand, custom. Using Beyer M-260 or Royer SF-1 ribbon mics followed by 10′ to 25′ of cable to the CL-2 and then 100′ of cable to a John Hardy M-1 mic pre results in exactly zero radio interference. In addition to increased output, the Cloudlifter also provides some slightly more appropriate impedance matching for older microphones. In addition, it provides pristine gain and ensures optimal impedance loading for dynamic and ribbon microphones.

My Cloudlifter CL-1 helps me get clean gain for dynamic microphones which I use in a demanding office/studio environment. The effect is different than EQ, but when you dial it just right (which is easy to do), it's like hearing your mic exactly the way it was meant to sound! While the CL-1 Cloudlifter is a somewhat niche product, it’ll help in a pinch if you’re on-location or need to clear up your desk a bit.

The Cloud Cloudlifter CL-1 provides up to 25dB of ultra-clean and transparent gain to complement your main mic pre. The CL-1 is an active, fixed-gain amplification device designed to “provide 20–25 dB of clean, quiet, extra gain for any passive microphone. Chris uses a Cloudlifter with a Scarlett 2i2 for his recording setup, but it’s not necessary if you can get a loud enough signal without one.

And I know it sounds ridiculous to mention it as advantage but really - from privacy and security standpoint microphone that constantly captures all sounds no matter if you actually use it or not is terrible concept. Massively popular with users of large diaphragm mics such as the Shure SM7B, Electrovoice RE20, RE320, Sennheiser MD421 and more. A Cloudlifter Mic Activator utilizes an active circuit powered by your console or preamp's phantom power to provide as much as +25dB of extra gain, turning even a budget console into a better ribbon preamp. For my purposes, I used to record myself banging on a kitchen pan to record snare tracks, and then replace the pan sound with a real snare using SoundReplacer. This product exists mostly because there’s a strange idea out there that you absolutely need a high-end mic like the Shure SM7B or Electro-Voice RE 20 to get good sounding recordings, and that’s simply not true. I maxed the gain on one channel, and adjusted the other one down to compensate for the boost from the Cloudlifter.
