Description

Guest curator of the centenary exhibition, Eric Ravilious: Imagined Realities , at the Imperial War Museum (2003), his other books include Britain in the series Modern Architectures in History (2007) and Curwen: Art and Print (2008).

He was sent to Macedonia where he spent two years on the front line, facing German and Bulgarian troops, before being invalided out after experiencing bouts of malaria. I was first introduced to Eric Ravilious through reading Leslie Worth's book on Watercolour which has been one of my greatest influences on painting. Powers comments on each one, in terms of their artistic quality as well as their context and origins; and he situates the work within the context of the life and within the broad sweep of his development. In addition to being a straight retrospective the book interprets Ravilious’s work on the basis of documentary sources and more recent readings of art and ideas. He was born in London to a Quaker mother from a family of optical instrument makers and Indian missionaries, and an engineer father who, as a keen amateur artist, encouraged his three children to draw and paint from an early age. This is a beautifully produced book worthy of a place on every lover of English landscapes bookshelf. Numerous illustrations, mostly in colour, including all the plates from the original edition of the legendary High Street.

Published by Published by Victoria and Albert Museum (Publishing), South Kensington, London First Edition . Now in a removable proprietary protective sleeve to which pieces of manila paper have been inserted to mask the stark white of the backing paper so as not to offend the eye on the bookshelf.Born in 1981 to a Japanese mother and an English father Takahashi grew up in North London before studying Fine Art at Bath Spa University College and Middlesex University. Eric Ravilious is well known for his wood engravings and for his designs, but more recently it is his watercolours which have, perhaps, been of central interest. Agreeing a compromise, his father sent him to study machine draughtsmanship at the Knirr School of Art, Munich, with the thought that this would give his son a skill he might apply professionally. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed. After schooling in Edinburgh, and contrary to his father’s wishes, Edward did not take up work at the mill; he wanted instead to study art.

With the addition of text from Ravilious's friend, Jim Richards, what was produced was one of the most famous and iconic illustrated books of the twentieth century. Dust Jacket - chips to extremities - max 8 mm in depth around head of spine and some red ink marks to fore edge of rear flap fold. After a few years the family moved to North London and here, interrupted only by his schooling at Christ’s Hospital, Hastings, Vaughan would live for the rest of his life. Ravilious is well known to a circle of collectors and admirers who feel no need to explain his work. But it is this very lack which Ravilious explores: so often in his paintings there is a conspicuousness of absence. He encountered Surrealism, and after moving back to England became a founding member of the British Surrealist Group.
