Johnstone’s get a rating of 5/5 for durability whilst scoring highly when it comes to ease of use and how easy it is to clean which is essential with British weather! Whilst the practicality of the paint is its strong point, it actually looks really good too. Unlike cheaper brands, you’ll find that once it’s dried, it won’t less any of its sheen. Whilst we wouldn’t recommend SCRUBBING any paint surfaces, gloss paint is able to withstand a rub down with soap and water

It’s a water based paint made from a PU Alkyd Emulsion containing a polymer effective at giving water-borne paints high scratch resistance and film toughness. If you do decide to use a roller, you’ll want to have a specific roller at hand that’s been designed for gloss application. A regular roller is likely to leave little fibres behind during application. Gloss paint isn’t very good at hiding imperfections so the secret to get a nice smooth finish with gloss paint is to firstly prepare the surface beforehand. You can do this by sanding down any imperfections which takes us to the next step.

For reasons of hygiene and safety, personal grooming products, cosmetics or items of intimate clothing cannot be returned.

You have the traditional oil-based gloss, which turns yellow over time. Water-based gloss, which stays white forever, but generally leaves a substandard finish. Then hybrid gloss, which is a compromise between oil and water. We hope this best gloss paint guide has provided you with all the information you need to make the right choice for your job. Get Prices for a Professional Decorator Near You This paint is touch-dry within an hour and re-coatable in around 4 to 6 hours making it a convenient option for surfaces such as doors and windows. While some paints can leave a strong odour for a lengthy period of time, you won’t get that problem with Brilliant White Even with a specific roller for gloss, you’ll want to lay it off with a good gloss brush once you’re done just to make sure you get that nice, smooth finish. How do you get a smooth finish with gloss paint? This particular gloss comes in a variety of colours including cream, white, barolo, victory red and vine green. Water-based gloss is harder to use (not levelling like oil-based gloss) but it won’t yellow with time, which is important for the client. One thing that is important for any decorator is drying time, and water-based gloss has a drying time of around 6 hours. This means you can put second coat on same day. It also doesn’t smell like solvent and finally, your brushes are easier to clean. This gloss still looks brand new years after it has been applied. You may find it easier to apply the paint using a foam roller, then laying off with a brush. Keeping your brush wet, or even wiping your surfaces with a damp cloth before painting will help you avoid brush marks. OK, I know I said oil-based gloss turns yellow over time, and it does. But Crown Next Generation takes an awful long time to discolour. Available online, or any Crown Decorating Centre. The best things about Ronseal One Coat is that it’s scratch and scuff resistant, heat resistant and most importantly stays white!

We’re big fans of the Ronseal One Coat and would recommend it over any other when it comes to gloss for radiators. If you really want a nice finish with this, we’d recommend giving your radiator a clean and sand down any rusty bits leftover from the old paint. Optionally, you can prime the radiator first with something like BIN Primer. Modern synthetic paintbrushes are of little use to apply oil-based gloss. You also need a certain type of roller. So, I thought I’d include a little section on the best brush and roller to go for.The Dulux Once Gloss gets our vote when it comes to one coat perfection! It’s easy to apply, has high durability and is easy to wash. Having used other one coat glosses in the past, we found that the Dulux Once Gloss covers much better and flows over woodwork especially. The benefit of this is that with one coat, you don’t want to be leaving any brush marks which is precisely what this paint achieves. Second is to make your brush slightly wet with water from time to time, so having a scuttle or mug with a little of water will be useful. It makes the gloss flow a lot easier. Just make sure to not do it too often, or too much water, as this gloss run like water anyway. You need a natural bristle paintbrush to apply oil-based gloss, otherwise the paint will clog within half an hour or so. Your best bet is the Hamilton Perfection, which is an oil-school brush, but still a favourite amongst Decorators. You will be able to apply gloss paint and lay it off with ease. Available online here.

It’s funny, a few years ago, Johnstone’s Aqua was widely regarded as the best white water-based gloss paint available. However, comparing it to the more modern Teknos Futura 90 just outlines its flaws. It is still good, but it’s harder to apply, can damage your brushes and turns yellow after a couple of years. Johnstone’s have produced a magnificent drop of paint at a great entry-level price which is perfect for exteriors. If you’re not an experienced painter and are looking for something that’s not going to leave you with brush marks, this is the paint for you!Is a bit of a long process from start of application to the finished article (although it’s definitely worth it when you get it right!)
