For younger bookworms – and nostalgic older ones too – there’s the Slightly Foxed Cubs series, in which we’ve reissued a number of classic nature and historical novels. Although it's a bit difficult to tell just from the photo if he's applying his trademark vibrato, but judging from the ecstatic expression on his face, I'd hazard a guess that he is. Play in a Day sold more than a million copies and many a youngster was able to learn to play the guitar as a result. Born in East Ham, London, top guitar star Bert Weedon wanted to play the guitar from his very early childhood.

Bert Weedon’s expert tuition and straightforward advice will not only help you learn basic skills but also give you the confidence and encouragement to go on to more advanced guitar playing. It also provides an excellent chart covering all of the strings [if you are learning notation] and their fret positions and a separate chart showing the open string notes. Although the video focuses primarily on Dr John, Eric does take a solo and every shot of his LH provides overwhelming evidence that during this performance at least, he somehow managed to shake off the "major influence" that Bert Weedon's teaching had on his LH technique, and play thumb over. The book covers every aspect of jazz, rock and pop arranging, from a basic lead sheet to scoring for full ensemble with voices. Highly regarded for his versatility, Bert's glittering career has been a strong influence on virtually every famous guitarist.Harry Randall… I’ve got his book and bought one of his amps the one he practised at home with I felt the need to help Maggie out after his demise!

Don't think this is it: you're now a guitarist fit to battle Edward van Halen, Jeff Loomis, and countless others who are true exponents. Ideal for the advanced pianist and a great insight into the mind of one America's greatest composers.

He was also seen regularly on British television in the 1950s, including some of the most popular children's television programmes. It was back in the 80s, when I was on holiday with my family at a slightly up-market holiday camp in Suffolk that I got to see Bert Weedon.

His name is B B King and I just happen to have in front of me a 1993 copy of Ralph Denyer's The Guitar Handbook open at a photo of B B. However, now that I have had an opportunity to delve through this book in conjunction with others, at times when I have had the need to find answers to questions, I realise that it is probably my most valuable teaching aid. Former jazz and danceband guitarist Bert Weedon will always be remembered as the most important and influential British guitarist of all time, for the multi-million-selling guitar tutorial which he'd written and published in 1957, Play In A Day. I have started to play the guitar again after 44 years and find the book invaluable particularly the techniques of playing.I have the book 'Play in a Day' -- which is brilliant in its own right -- but the DVD adds so much as well. Bert Weedon's 'Play in a Day' a promise to bring good music back | Back in the day, Bert Weedon taught a whole generation of renowned musicians how to play music. Although this of course proves nothing, it does seem to suggest that the vast majority of those players who have been innovators and major influences in that vast field of music where blues, rock and jazz intermingle did or do, at one time or another, employ the thumb over LH technique. I should also point out that the main benefits, in my experience, of playing thumb over are to be found when playing chords, and in particular what might be loosely termed "jazz" chords, ie extended and altered chords, substitutions and jazz chord progressions in general, many of which are incorporated in blues.

May once referred to Weedon as the "Guitar Wizard" and "a legend", while in a 1970s interview Clapton said: "I wouldn't have felt the urge to press on without the tips and encouragement that Bert's book Play in a Day gives you. Bert has been repeatedly namechecked by subsequent generations of British guitarists as being the man who inspired them to first play the guitar, most notably Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards, Hank B Marvin, Joe Brown, George Harrison, John Lennon, Dave Davies, Pete Townshend, Mark Knopfler, Brian May, and many more.Slightly Foxed introduces its readers to books that are no longer new and fashionable but have lasting appeal. If it won't go there we learn to accommodate our failings until, after thought and practise, a tuneful and painless compromise is reached. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages. The whole point though is that his thumb was never at any time during the performance anywhere near the centre of the back of the neck as taught by Bert Weedon and to be fair, most other tutors that I am aware of. The Hogarth Press where I’m working, is in the heart of the literary world, with authors coming in all the time.
