The setting of the book is important because only Gravity Falls can have such weirdness in its boundaries. The narrator is reliable because he is the character in the story and this is his journal entries. A theme that recurs throughout the book is that weirdness is in the world for a reason. This theme can be seen when Ford talks to Dipper about how them being in Gravity Falls was similar to a destiny.
