About this deal

So now that we’ve got a little bit better understanding of what a Wiccan altar is, we have to ask ourselves the million dollar question–is an altar really necessary to practicing Wicca or witchcraft?

Symbols and objects that reflect your practice such as images or items to represent deities, ancestors or the elements God and Goddess figures – this can be whoever you choose to worship to. It can be just one, both, many or none depending on what you believe. There are eight Wiccan holidays, known as Sabbats, that celebrate the cycles and seasons of nature. These include the four seasons (Winter, Spring, Autumn & Summer), the mating habits of animals and the reaping and sowing of crops. Based on the Sabbat, the altar is decorated accordingly. For example, the Summer Solstice altar cloth should be white and the altar decorated with Summer flowers, fruits and anything else that symbolizes Summer. [2] This goes for each Sabbat. Certain Wiccan traditions may have different colors but universally, the altar is usually decorated to represent the time of year. Designating space for tools or other objects on your altar can be a challenge. There are already so many things that need to go on there that these objects can really start to pile up! So remember, your mileage may vary depending on how big your altar is and what purpose you’re designing it for.

Creating an maintaining a Wiccan altar isn’t the most time- or energy-intensive thing you can do, but it does take work. And if the thought of adding another obligation to your plate sounds like the last thing you want, then it’s perfectly fine to hold off on creating one. Place your cup of water on the Western side of your altar, welcoming the spirits of the West: water, emotion, flexibility, love. Your cup of water represents the element water. Give thanks to the spirits of each of the directions that you called and invite them to leave if they must or to stay if they wish. Lustral Waters and ritual sprays are a great smoke-free alternative for those that cannot burn things at home. They can be easily sprayed around your altar, your home/room, or even on yourself when you're the one that needs some cleansing.Arrange your items according to the tradition you follow or your intuition. Remember to leave space for spellwork or divination if you intend to use your altar for these. If your altar features candles, incense, or anything else lit be aware of how you place them and when they’re burning. As much as possible, keep them away from flammable objects on your altar, and always have a plan and tools ready in case an accidental fire does start. A spell is an act of thinking about what you need or want most right now and declaring it to the Universe. When we do this, the Universe hears our call and helps to give us what we’re seeking. It’s a way of combining thought, symbols, and playfulness as you craft your spell and try to attract your deepest heart desires.

Bell: this clears energy, so you typically use it at the end of your ritual. Place it on the God’s side, towards the element of air. Is the bathroom your happy place? Set up your witchy altar there if that’s where you feel like your best self.So now we know that altars are special places where people perform religious rituals and rites, but that still doesn’t tell us much about the purposes of a specifically Wiccan altar. Why should a witch want one? If you’re still undecided about whether a Wiccan altar is right for you, take a look at the following scenarios and see how much they apply to you.
