In the 1960s, the vast majority of Australia’s trade was done with Europe and North America. Both the export market and the import market have shifted to Asia in recent years. Asia accounts for more than 60% of two-way goods and services trade between Australia and the rest of the world. The colonisation is why there is a Union Flag (the flag of the UK) in the top corner of the Australian flag, and many other flags around the world such as New Zealand or Tuvalu. Although Australia is independent, they still have the British monarch as the head of state, but this is purely a symbolic role and holds no political power. The British government begins to fund migration to Australia. The sale of land is used to finance the scheme The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is made up of 4 countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. This leads more broadly to a consideration of the geographical dimensions of Australia’s Empire and Canada’s empire. Both emerge as fundamentally bi-lateral affairs. As Schreuder and Ward observe:Macquarie also played a leading role in the economic development of New South Wales by employing a planner to design the street layout of Sydney and commissioning the construction of roads, wharves, churches, and public buildings. He sent explorers out from Sydney and, in 1815, a road across the Blue Mountains was completed, opening the way for large scale farming and grazing in the lightly-wooded pastures west of the Great Dividing Range. [80] [81] The United Kingdom was Australia’s leading trading partner from colonial times until 1880, when it accounted for 70% of Australia’s imports and 80% of exports (Vamplew 1987). In the twentieth century, Australia was still the primary trading partner of the United Kingdom.

Catholic convicts were compelled to attend Church of England services and their children and orphans were raised by the authorities as Protestant. [90] The first Catholic priest colonists arrived in Australia as convicts in 1800—James Harold, James Dixon, and Peter O'Neill, who had been convicted for "complicity" in the Irish 1798 Rebellion. Dixon was conditionally emancipated and permitted to celebrate Mass. On 15 May 1803, in vestments made from curtains and with a chalice made of tin, he conducted the first Catholic Mass in New South Wales. [90] Banner, Stuart (2005). "Why Terra Nullius? Australia was a continent with no opposition and no land that the British could easily occupy. The remoteness and harshness were exactly what the old country needed when it wanted to export its most troublesome commodities, namely criminals and undesirables. Australia’s position as a penal colony made it an ideal location. The harsh realities of prison life and the settling of conflicts with fists gave prisoners the strength to live their lives. The theft of less than a shilling, for example, may land you in Australia for a first offense. Despite the fact that most crimes today are mild in comparison to previous generations, tough people are still capable of doing so. Originally, the Australian penal colony was conceived as a British colonial establishment.

In 1789 former convict James Ruse produced the first successful wheat harvest in NSW. He repeated this success in 1790 and, because of the pressing need for food production in the colony, was rewarded by Governor Phillip with the first land grant made in New South Wales. Ruse's 30-acre grant at Rose Hill, near Parramatta, was aptly named 'Experiment Farm'. [20] This was the colony's first successful farming enterprise, and Ruse was soon joined by others. The colony began to grow enough food to support itself, and the standard of living for the residents gradually improved.Nearly all these early settlements arose from the enterprise of particular companies and magnates rather than from any effort on the part of the English crown. The crown exercised some rights of appointment and supervision, but the colonies were essentially self-managing enterprises. The formation of the empire was thus an unorganized process based on piecemeal acquisition, sometimes with the British government being the least willing partner in the enterprise.

May 1787 – The 11 ships of the First Fleet leave Portsmouth under the command of Captain Arthur Phillip. Different accounts give varying numbers of passengers but the fleet consisted of at least 1,350 persons of whom 780 were convicts and 570 were free men, women and children and the number included four companies of marines. About 20% of the convicts were women and the oldest convict was 82. About 50% of the convicts had been tried in Middlesex and most of the rest were tried in the county assizes of Devon, Kent and Sussex Australia's major electoral developments Timeline: 1788 – 1899". Among the first true works of Australian literature produced over this period was the accounts of the settlement of Sydney by Watkin Tench, captain-lieutenant of the marines on the First Fleet to arrive in 1788. In 1819, poet, explorer, journalist and politician William Wentworth published the first book written by an Australian: A Statistical, Historical, and Political Description of the Colony of New South Wales and Its Dependent Settlements in Van Diemen's Land, With a Particular Enumeration of the Advantages Which These Colonies Offer for Emigration and Their Superiority in Many Respects Over Those Possessed by the United States, [99] in which he advocated an elected assembly for New South Wales, trial by jury and settlement of Australia by free emigrants rather than convicts. In 1838 The Guardian: a tale by Anna Maria Bunn was published in Sydney. It was the first Australian novel printed and published in mainland Australia and the first Australian novel written by a woman. It is a Gothic ce. [100] The Colony of New South Wales was created as a penal colony by the Kingdom of Great Britain in Australia east of 135° east. [1] Word of the establishment was proclaimed in Australia by Governor Arthur Phillip on 7 February 1788. [2] The commission included "all the islands adjacent in the Pacific Ocean" within the latitudes of 10°37' south and 43°39' south, which included most of New Zealand. [1]
