About this deal

If the sink is not capable of draining all the water you put in, the water level (= body temperature) will rise. Finally, what about the filters? Honestly, I don’t have a good way to test that or the claim associated with it. So, let’s focus on what it does. First, the filters are “activated carbon filters”, which Elite primarily focuses their marketing/use cases on both “removing odors” as well as “removing pollutants”. Remember that in addition to using the app to toggle between these modes, you can also use that settings button on the front of the fan, which will toggle through these modes and put it into a passive listening mode so the next time you jump on the trainer, it just starts automatically.

Core regularly conducts similar tests with some of the most elite athletes in the world – such as the Olympic gold medal-winning Norwegian triathlon team – and sports clothing brands to assess the cooling capabilities of their fabrics. In this case, the same principles were applied to evaluate and comparedifferent fans as a source of external cooling. Next, what about air/wind flow? In other words, how good a blowing job did it do? Well, I didn’t have any cooling issues while using it. It felt like a nice strong column of air – and obviously at those speeds, a very forceful one. For fun, and because this is the kind of geek I am, I put up my wind sensor that I normally use to test drones in high-wind conditions, and tested out the speeds recorded at different distances up to my face. Here’s the fan speed directly out of the front of the blower – I show this in the video a fair bit:

HELP & INFO

As many of us have experienced, the body’s ability to dissipate heat is limited. Whether it be a hard climb on a stiflingly hot day outdoors or a hard indoor session, the heat build-up eventually becomes too much for the body to dissipate. With specific protocols and managed correctly, this increased heat and core body temperaturein training can result in performance gainson race day. More often, though, and especially when mismanaged, this heat build-up is detrimental to training at best and even quite dangerous, causing severe heat exhaustion, among other harmful side effects. Much like the Vacmaster, the Headwind is powerful enough to be uncomfortable for all but the hardest efforts in average room temperature environments. I found myself most often using the middle two-speed settings in my relatively chilly garage. Again, like the Vacmaster, the limited standing positions are less versatile than angle adjustable fans. That said, Wahoo has included two foot positions for placing the fan on the floor or desk and the Headwind channels the air nicely onto the body from both positions. The main reason you see ANT+ only for the cycling bits, is that it ensures the fan doesn’t accidentally take up the single-concurrent channel for Bluetooth for many slightly older smart trainers or power meters. Whereas virtually every smart trainer/power meter on the market is dual ANT+/Bluetooth (which have unlimited ANT+ connections). Meanwhile, for both heart rate sensors & CORE temperature sensors, by default it’ll use ANT+ (again, to preserve those single-channel Bluetooth connections). You can manually toggle on Bluetooth connectivity in the settings panel. All that said, the Vacmaster, at half the price of the Wahoo and, crucially, with its push-button remote control, edges it into first place for me. The ease of use of the standard remote is essential for me with these high powered fans. That high power is a blessing and a curse and on-the-go adjustment is essential as ride intensity changes.

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! And actually it is interesting because it’s a lot cheaper than I was expecting. Even at the recent spike in electricity prices in the UK, an hour of Cardio54 usage cost just over 6p (less than a dime, Ameri-fans). I bought (requested the buying of) the Vacmaster some nine months into my indoor cycling journey. Until that point, I’d been using a cheap (I assume) desktop fan that makes more noise than air movement.

Elite doesn’t specify on their technical specs the exact levels or microns of stuff it’ll remove, instead saying “Activated carbon filtration is a technique used for air purification, where a gas stream is passed through a filter that contains activated carbon. This filtration process takes advantage of the porous structure of activated carbon, allowing it to effectively absorb various volatile organic compounds found in the air, thus removing air pollutants.” Strengths: Strong air speed, narrow channeled air flow, cooling sensation, speed and heart rate connectivity. Alternatives: DeWalt CentriFugal Air Mover / X-Power Mini Mighty Air Mover / Vacmaster 550 CFM Air MoverThe high power setting is fairly loud, but not in a vibratey-through-the-floorboards kind of way. It’s rare that I need this setting though – low power is fine for most of my training sessions (if we can call them that). Wrangling the Cardio54 is so simple, it hardly warrants a section. But sure, I’ll throw a few words at it.
