About this deal

Feeding comes across as a Radiohead-influenced song and sounds initially jarring in its modernity and displays a left of centre approach to song and lyric writing. In fact, throughout Saudade, the lyrics are designed to take centre stage rather than sit behind the music. Powell is a clever so and so, make no mistake. This is on another level that would have seen me possibility give up & give in, or have a nervous breakdown

Well, it's been a rough old few years, hasn't it? And sure, it's 2023, but even without the global pandemic, life can get a little sad from time to time. Sometimes the only antidote is a tub of ice cream, some incredibly sad songs and a seriously good cry. So don't worry, we've got you. In our opinion, the best sad songs don’t just whine and gesture at bad feelings - they wallow in the depths with you. I have nothing but praise for Claire, having been a single parent with a child with Adhd & Ocd, I know how hard life can be... Musically, it is difficult to pigeonhole the music Powell makes, but I get flashes of early Bowie, Keane and the much-missed Delays in the songs that make up Saudade. Powell is that most old-fashioned of things, a singer/songwriter, a phrase that seems to have fallen out of favour in recent times but one that seems to sum things up here. The fall of the World Trade Center Towers during 9/11 saw Simon & Garfunkel perform The Boxer at several memorial concerts. The song was chosen by the artists because of its sense of loss for the American Dream. Despite the sadness of the song, it rises to an image of the boxer refusing to accept defeat from his opponent. A foreboding bass note introduces Deserted By Every God. Soon a sparse bass drum and skeletal snare gives the song a rhythm to hold on to until the chorus again gives us firmer ground on which to stand. An album highlight, Deserted By Every God builds slowly but surely until it again hits epic territory and shows us why Saudade is an album that very much deserves your time and attention. It’s probably safe to assume that Robyn advocates dancing your worries away, so it makes sense that she’d write a song that’s empowering in its self-awareness. She sums up those natural feelings of jealousy when an ex moves on to someone new sooner than expected. But instead of writing a dreary ballad about it, Robyn flipped the script. Though she’s watching her former love get frisky with his “new friend” in the club, the chorus doesn’t come across as self-pitying. Instead she triumphantly announces, “I keep dancing on my own.” The situation is undeniably hurtful and uncomfortable, but Robyn wants her audience to know that she’s going to be just fine alone, and you are too.— Tess Duncan I started & finished reading it in one sitting... I had to know the outcome for both Mother & Son & the impacts of raising a child with such complex mental issues.. The undulating pedal steel guitar on “D-I-V-O-R-C-E” pulls at metaphorical heartstrings, but the lyrical content is gut-wrenching enough on its own. Tammy Wynette articulates the internal struggle of so many divorcees-to-be with children, the strain and ache in her warble serving as a vehicle for her overwhelming remorse. Plus juxtaposing words like “toy” and “surprise” with “divorce” and “custody” severely ups the misery factor.— Tess Duncan

The song titles hint at Powell’s mood as he worked, with Deserted By Every God and These Tears Won’t Cry Themselves evoking desolate images before a note of the album is played. It is a pleasant surprise then that Saudade is a far cry from being a downbeat trip through somebody else’s solitude and is instead an uplifting and ultimately positive experience. Drake’s album, Take Care, is 20 songs of emotion and unhappiness. Doing it Wrong jumps to the top of the list of Drake’s great breakup songs. The emotion of the artist comes through and will help you channel your unhappiness. Saudade may be defined as “a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone”, but it can also be the first step on a path to better, brighter times. Few songs have the emotional power of Maps because of the rawness of the situation. Karen O was in a relationship with fellow musician, Angus Andrew when she wrote the song about being away from her lover. The video features a crying Karen O who was upset about the fact Andrew was late for the video shoot and she would leave on tour directly after the promo was completed.I hope that anyone struggling with a child, no matter what age, will read this book and take some inspiration from it. No matter how hard it seems, don't lose your sense of humor, don't give up hope, turn to your friends when you need to (especially that one SUPER GOOD ONE that won't blame you for your child's behavior), DON'T ask anyone who doesn't have kids for parenting advice (DCFS is FULL of staff without children, which I find is a huge issue), stay away from judgmental people, ignore judgmental looks and stares (they don't know you or what you're going through), and eventually things WILL work out. And don't try to convince yourself that you, as a step parent, can love your spouse's children the same as if they were your own either. You won't. EVER. It's nothing to be ashamed of. It's just how it is. And how it should be, really. That depth of love is reserved for our own children. It cannot be replaced, and shouldn't be. If Claire had to give even a small portion of the love she had for Grayson to a child that was not her own there's no way she'd have been able to do all she did for him...and that things would have turned out the way they did. Frank Ocean broke into the mainstream with Swim Good. The song is bleak and unhappy as it depicts the depression and unhappiness of Ocean’s main character. The suicidal thoughts and sense of despair are on full show as he contemplates suicide. There are many reasons why you can find the best sad songs and cry at their content. Feeling we have lost something or somebody in our lives can make us feel sad and want to cry along with a favorite artist. Let us know if we missed out on any of the top sad songs ever made! With an equally evocative title, Makarska Sunset, 25th May 2018 is another instrumental, this time featuring a lone, almost classical piano melody for its brief running time of just under a minute. It serves as almost a palette cleanser for the rest of the album. Away Until Christmas Morning again evokes the 60s psych era, with Bowie/Barrett flourishes very much to the fore. Powell finds beauty in sadness as he sings “the dark is on your side and the night is beautiful”. The piano work here is beautiful, with clever use of dissonance hinting at the song’s deeper concerns. When Claire walked into a room, men paid attention. She was beautiful, she was blonde, and she dressed like a Kardashian. Saudade finishes as it started, with an instrumental given the name of a saying derived from a foreign language – Sine Qua Non, meaning something that, in its absence, would result in something else not happening, some kind of emotional catalyst. As such, it bookends Saudade very effectively and leaves us with a pleasant taste in the mouth after some emotional depths have been plumbed. That molten caramel voice drenches an acoustic guitar. Another man-fighting-with-his-wife country ballad is deceptive as the chorus swells up “You don’t know sadness til you face life alone / You don’t know about lonely ’til it’s chiseled in stone…” Suddenly, sorrow’s permanence is concrete, pride is poison and Vern Gosdin bends notes and your heart. It’s 1989’s Country Music Association’s Song of the Year for good reason.— Holly Gleason Saudade then is a powerful word. It is also the name of the new album by The Sad Song Co., which gives it much to live up to.

The author Claire Josephine took a very serious very sad and very dear to her heart story about her son and found a way to make me laugh through the hard stuff, to laugh through my tears. Most of the time I forgot I was reading a true story because Claire's young life couldn't possibly be so freaking cool. The moaning organ provides a steady accompaniment for Tom Waits’ gruff wailing on this desolate blues song. He delivers with anxiety-driven urgency, sounding like he could just break down into a blubbering frenzy at any moment. The horn section rides along smoothly in comparison, cresting and dipping deftly as Waits sings vigorously, wounds exposed. There’s no one who can pull off the palpable dejection of “I don’t need anybody, ’cause I learned to be alone” quite like Waits does.— Tess Duncan George Jones thought the song was too sappy and cliché to be a hit but recorded it years after he had reached his commercial peak. The country staple has sounded melodramatic in the hands of other bands and singers but Jones gives the story of loss and lost loves a poignant feeling that breaks your heart. A karaoke favorite, Jolene is a sad song about desperately trying to hold onto your boyfriend or husband. Despite the upbeat chorus, Parton pleads with the title character not to crush her dreams by stealing the love of her life.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the bands that have the power to spark a party in life or to drive you to the tissue box. Under the Bridge will make you cry every time and is about a time when lead singer, Anthony Kiedis felt alone and unloved. A recovering addict, Kiedis gives us a glimpse into the city as a character in his personal story. A Love Letter to I’m Sorry and a Tribute to Funny Moms in 3 Bits By Annie Berke September 6, 2023 | 11:48am It’s difficult to talk about “Two-Headed Boy Pt. 2” without talking about the album it brings to a powerful close, but I do believe that even without the context of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea, the song stands out as one of the most moving pieces of music in the past two decades. Like most of Jeff Mangum’s work, there are times when you have to put in some effort to parse the expressionistic imagery (“blister please with those wings in your spine…how he’d love to find your tongue in his teeth”) but at other times, the emotion is plain and jarring. “In my dreams you’re alive,” he sings, in that plaintive, keening, inimitable voice, and it builds to a climax that I, personally, find devastating: “When we break, we’ll wait for our miracle. God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life.” I can’t think of a better way to encapsulate the hope and fear and agony and grace of being alive. Nor can I think of anyone who can somehow express this inexpressible concept with such power and emotional precision quite like Mangum. At the song’s end, you can hear the scuffling sound of a chair as he rises and leaves—a subtle, poignant conclusion to one of the most singular, beautiful albums ever made.— Shane Ryan The Verve are often accused of overproducing their songs until they are too sugary to enjoy. Richard Ashcroft is accepted as the leading frontman of his time and gives a stunning vocal to his song about a personal journey through substance use and depression. Ashcroft’s personal demons have become his driving force and this song reflects on the time he lost to this substance abuse.
