Banda, P. Solomon (September 18, 2010). "Lynx reintroduction ruled a success in Colorado". The Denver Post. Associated Press . Retrieved September 18, 2010. During mating season—which takes place at the end of the winter or in early spring—females will only breed with one male. Rival males will screech at each other as they fight over the female. About two months after mating, females give birth to a litter of between one and four kittens that she will raise herself with no involvement from the male.

The Iberian lynx is far rarer and lives only in the southern parts of Spain. It used to live in eastern Portugal as well but became extinct there. Carnivores split into two groups – Carniformia and Feliformia– around 40 million years ago. The Carniformia group was more bear-like and evolved into bears, dogs, weasels, raccoons, skunks, badgers, sea lions, walruses, and seals. Feliformia was more cat-like and evolved into cats, hyenas, and mongooses. Geraads, Denis Date=1980. "Un nouveau felide (Fissipeda, mammalia) du pleistocene moyen du Maroc: Lynx thomasi N. sp". Geobios. 13 (3): 441–444. doi: 10.1016/S0016-6995(80)80079-9. {{ cite journal}}: CS1 maint: numeric names: authors list ( link)The evidence and information presented to [our members] hasn’t given them any level of assurance, so they’re left with a position that they can only object. If further activity and further assurances were presented to them, we would take another sounding from our members,” says Copeland. Extensive road systems in Europe represent one of the barriers for these populations, and there are high numbers of mortality in lynx populations that have been reintroduced, with many individuals being hit by cars as they try to travel between habitats. Lynx are a keystone species for a number of reasons. As large predator, they keep populations under control, but when ambush predators like this are about, prey animals need to stay on the alert. This leads them to alter their behaviour; staying away from areas in which they could be easily cut off or ambushed. Reintroducing a wild cat into an environment 500 years after it became extinct is complex. Giving people good-quality, reliable information about the species is a precursor to a successful reintroduction, and so far the debate has been impassioned and polarised, says David Hetherington, author of The Lynx and Us, and an ecologist working in the Cairngorms national park.

The game’s writing strikes a fine balance between serious sci-fi world-building, biting corporate satire, and deadpan irreverence. Hardspace: Shipbreaker’s loading screens feature excerpts from the LYNX employee manual and in-universe history books detailing everything from the company’s unofficial ownership of Earth to company-mandated warnings cautioning you about the dangers of using your laser torch to slice baked goods. The Eurasian Lynx played a critical role in European ecosystems for millennia. They’re the third-largest predator in Europe and the largest of the four lynx species. While they’re not quite as big as a wolf, they’re still listed as top predators and therefore have a significant impact on their environment.

Lynx Physical Characteristics

These stealthy cats avoid humans and hunt at night, so they are rarely seen. They usually target one primary prey. For Canada lynx, that’s the snowshoe hare and for the Iberian lynx, it’s the European rabbit. Meanwhile, bobcats have a more varied diet of rabbits, hares, rodents, and sometimes birds, while the larger Eurasian lynx hunts deer and other small animals. The first mammals are believed to have lived 208 million years ago – after the extinction of dinosaurs. The first carnivores came from animals known as miacoids about 60 million years ago. These tree dwellers were about the size of a domestic cat and had developed sharp crushing teeth. Miacoids are the oldest relative to the modern-day lynx. There’s an unsourced claim going around that a lynx can see a mouse 76m (250ft) away. However, when tested, researchers concluded that they have more or less the same visual acuity as a house cat, and far less than a human, so it’s unlikely to be true. Lynxes are medium-size, solitary wildcats that roam the forests of North America, Europe, and Asia. While their name comes from a Greek word meaning “ to shine”—because of their reflective eyes—their defining features are the prominent tufts of hair above their ears, and their short, stubby tails.
