Description

You could point to the setting and say, “This part of the story is taking place outside of the dragon’s cave.” The Paper Bag Princess explores gender roles; instead of the prince rescuing the princess, the princess is rescuing the prince. Rather than the prince defeating the dragon, the princess not only defeats the dragon, but she does so by outsmarting him. It also shows kids that it is okay to stand up for yourself. And, in the end, it reveals that beauty is more than skin deep and that we do not need someone else to be happy or valuable. Princess Elizabeth is a daring female protagonist; a superb role model for little ones. She takes matters into her own hands and outsmarts the dragon in a game of wits.

What if you were a boy and wanted to take care of children or a girl and wanted to be a firefighter? Editions of Munsch personally reading the story has also been uploaded onto platforms such as YouTube. [17] Interactive [ edit ] This story works well for highlighting CSPAR because it has an entertaining story line, a few central characters, and a clear-cut problem. It’s especially captivating for preschoolers who may be familiar with other stories involving princes, princesses and dragons. Davies, Bronwyn (1989). The Paper Bag Princess - Wikipedia

Be resourceful; be strong; girls can be heroes, especially if they use their brains; don't wait for a guy to come along and save you; expect people to respect you for who you really are, not for how you look or the clothes you wear; looking like a prince doesn't make you one. By talking about these ideas before the story even starts, you are helping your child orient herself to the key elements of the story. Also, when you use the actual CSPAR names (character, problem, action, setting, and resolution), it’s helpful to stress and explain them so your child becomes familiar with those terms. This was a fantastic story. The kids enjoyed it too with dragons and princesses. I like this princess, she has worth. How does the princess change from beginning to end? How does the artist show her changing? How about the dragon and the prince?

The Paperbag Princess by Robert Munsch - Forest Lodge Academy

Before starting the story, you might ask your child, “Do you remember the big problem in this story?” If she doesn’t, that’s okay. You can remind her by saying, “The problem in this story is that the dragon took Prince Ronald and Princess Elizabeth has to get past the dragon to save the prince.” During the reading, when your child points to or comments about something happening in the book, use it as an opportunity to highlight an element of CSPAR: She’s only just turned four so the skills needed to draw are still fairly new to her and she was super pleased with her princess’s face. Determined to save her prince, she sets out, wearing only a paper bag, to follow the trail of destruction left by the dragon. Is looking like a princess part of acting like a princess? (If one should act like a prince to really be a prince, does that include looking like a prince?) But, I think I would have liked this a lot better had it only been about the dragon, or only been about the relationship with the prince - but I didn't like them both together because one seemed to undermine the other.

I thought I reviewed this one already. This is an instructive fairytale for young children about not putting up with a bunch of crap. The paper bag princess is engaged to marry Prince Ronald, this handsome, uptight tennis-playing eighties-yuppie-style monarch, until she has to battle a fire-breathing dragon using only her wits. Elizabeth the princess outsmarts the dragon, but not before his fire breath blows away all of her clothes and she's left to conceal her nakedness by wearing a paper bag. When she emerges triumphant from battling the dragon, like a spunky, young lady Beowulf, Ronald is totally grossed out by her appearance and tells her not to come near him until she showers and changes and fixes her hair and looks like a beautiful princess again. Compare The Paper Bag Princess to other fairy tales? How is it different from more traditional stories? How does Princess Elizabeth compare with princesses in other books you've read or movies you've seen, perhaps Cinderella, Frozen, Rapunzel , or Sleeping Beauty? What do you like or dislike about each of them, and how did they solve the problem they faced? Brighouse, Jo (7 February 2014). "The issue - Little princesses need to crown new heroines Magazine". It then ends with an illustration of Elizabeth running off into the sunset with glee since they did not get married after that. Did you know you can flag iffy content? Adjust limits for Violence & Scariness in your kid's entertainment guide. Get started Close The Paper Bag Princess was first told at the Bay Area Childcare Center in Coos Bay Oregon where I had a job in 1973 and 1974. I had been telling lots and lots of dragon stories. They were all fairly regular dragon stories where the prince saves the princess from the dragon. The Paperbag Princess subtly teaches the little ones(girls, especially) several things; one, material possession is fleeting, two, beauty is more than skin-deep, three, wisdom is a weapon, four, you can be your own hero, and five, acceptance and respect comprise genuine love. Did I miss anything? Oh yeah, why not shed double standards while we're at it.
