Beauty, the heroine of this modern fairy tale, is virtually friendless and re-christened 'Ugly' by her school tormentors. She's also contending with an explosively angry father who delights in belittling her and her mother.

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award. This has to be my favourite JW of all time. It's so utterly tragic in the beginning, but Beauty's story still managed to be relatable because everyone's felt belittled even if it's just to a small degree. Of course, Dilly is my favourite mum character too. I feel like so often in JW the mum is the problem parents so to see a mother so dedicated to her daughter's happiness made me tear up so many times. Cookie is one of those books that you can't put down until you know the end!! I felt so sorry for poor Beauty [Cookie] she got teased terribly by horrid girls, and her evil Dad was mean as a hungry bull. I loved this book. Beauty Cookson is no beauty. She's a plain, timid girl surrounded by super-confident, snooty girls at school. Worse than the teasing in the playground, though, is the unpredictable criticism from her father. Eventually, after an unbearable birthday party and a very real fear that Dad's temper is out of control, Mum and Beauty run away. About This Edition ISBN: This is one of my favourite Jacqueline Wilson books, and I think Beauty is one of my favourite of her characters too - I find her very relatable, especially her vivid imagination, her awkwardness, and her love of Sara Crewe from 'A Little Princess'.

Ellie, whose mother died when she was young, misses her love and advice terribly, particularly when it comes to the ever-difficult area of boys.

Beauty was an interesting, three-dimensional character; a smart, quiet girl who enjoys art and a children's show called 'The Rabbit Hutch'. I liked that the show proved to be so important to the plot, as I thought at first it was just an odd little quirk of Beauty's. I am glad that the ending was more satisfying this time, though it was still open-ended (in a good way). This is evidently a complex situation but I think Jacqueline Wilson has dealt with it remarkably well. We can clearly see how Dilys and Beauty feel oppressed by him. Even though his actions seem loving from the outside, they clearly torment the girls and we are shown how Beauty has learned to act at a young age to please her father. From a very early age Sharratt loved to draw so it was no surprise that when he left school he decided to go to Manchester Polytechnic to do a foun More Wilson's next book, My Secret Diary, is about her own life as a teenager and is out next March. It will not be age-banded, Wilson said. Alsie wrote: "Weird theres some by different authors in here. It's meant to be just Jacqueline wilson! Just because it's got the same illustrator, doesnt mean it's a JW book!" Skye Wortley: A rude girl in Beauty's class who takes pleasure in bullying Beauty and calling her nasty names like "Ugly".

Jacqueline Wilson wrote her first novel when she was nine years old, and she has been writing ever since. She is now one of Britain's bestselling and most beloved children's authors. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather. More than forty million copies of her books have been sold.I also feel that the character of Beauty's father was particularly well portrayed. He obviously felt a certain amount of love and affection for his daughter and wife, and wasn't only a villain. However, he was capable of some truly awful things. It was nice to see a character in a younger child's book rendered in many different shades of grey.

Hugely popular with seven to ten year olds: she should be prescribed for all cases of reading reluctance Independent on Sunday Her refuge is a children's TV show featuring a pet rabbit, but when she is given a real rabbit for her birthday, her father is enraged.
