Yes, there’s one main river crossing on F26, roughly in the middle of the road, right next to Nýidalur hut. It starts from Highway 60 (Vestfjarðavegur), runs over a mountain, and ends up at Ingjaldssandur valley. BTW, I managed to cross them in my Honda CRV, but it felt like it was on the edge 😉 the water was my knee height, so almost as high as the air intake. Having the Iceland road map marked with the driving route and accommodations allows you to check and make sure the map on your phone is actually taking you the correct route.

If you are interested in specific details about each river crossing on F208 South, reach out for our Day 3 journey blog post. If an old date appears on a map the most likely reason is that an old map has been cached on the user's computer or a computer it is communicating with.Up to the Kerlingarfjoll mountain resort, F347 is just a gravel road with potholes doable even by a 2wd car.

The best jeep from MyCar is a raised Land Cruiser (150 LX 2021) – if it’s still available I can only recommend it. This is not very convenient though, because you have to walk the distance from the car to the campsite (around 10 minutes) each time you need something from your car (and this will happen often, trust me). All three of them – F752, F821, and F26 are much more difficult to drive, so you should choose your car according to where you will be driving next. Jimny is considered to be a small-sized SUV, which, when driven in the right way and in good weather may be enough. On the other hand, there were years when the first snow came in the first half of September and F-roads closed at that time.We drove the 832 – Vaðlaheiðarvegur with our Dacia Duster 4×4 rental this 1 september and we found it really easy to drive this road. As already mentioned, the main danger of this road are not river crossings, but rather its remoteness and some really rough sections. In any case, it’s possible to leave your car parked at the end of 842 and hike the last 3-4km to the waterfall.

F261 leads along the northern side of Thorsmork valley and connects it with the eastern part of F210. The more the road is located to the center of Iceland (the coldest part of Iceland), the later it opens. If you don’t want to drive and prefer appreciate the beautiful landscapes all the time (not having to watch the road lol), many organized tours are proposed.

Based on the book Iceland Road Guide (Vegahandbókin) which has been travelling for 40 years in the vehicles of Icelanders and foreigners alike, and has been steadily improved and updated with every new edition. We drove the track leading to Bjólfur avalanche barriers viewpoint in a super jeep and utilized our discounts for Icelandic super jeeps and large 4×4 cars.

I will travel to Iceland in 2 weeks and I am wondering if the F349-old-Kerlingarfjoll is still driveable? We’ve spent months driving F-roads in Iceland during several different trips in different cars and under various road conditions. It’s after the factory when 649 becomes F649 and the road conditions get much more rougher and bumpier.

It has a few unbridged rivers (or streams) that need crossing, but for me, the highlight of F839 is in the middle where there is a steep descent following a tight bridge and then ascent back up. In short, this means the track is even more difficult than F-roads and most car insurance packages do not cover it.
