Dear god, this book was dreadful. I’m not exaggerating. The characters were flat at best and mean at worst. They made me feel depressed. Even more depressing was that they didn’t become shark food. The author himself, in an updated Introduction from 2005 (a year before his death) explains that “I could never write Jaws today. I could never demonize an animal, especially not an animal that is much older and much more successful in its habitat than man is.” a b Curtis, Bryan (February 16, 2006). "Peter Benchley – The man who loved sharks". Slate . Retrieved March 18, 2015. Peter, along with his wife Wendy, made it their lives mission to right the perceived wrong message of Jaws and focus on educating people on sharks, their importance in the ocean, and their key to our survival. a b Hawtree, Christopher (February 14, 2006). Spielberg, Carl Gottlieb, John Williams and Verna Fields all get a lot of credit for the success of Jaws, but Benchley is that starting point. Without his idea, there would be no film, there would be no Amity Island. Outside of real events, Jaws wasn’t the first time a great white shark had taken the stage as a subject. The 1971 documentary Blue Water, White Death by Peter Gimbal and James Lipscomb featured audacious footage of the predator, which had been first filmed underwater only five years before. Peter Matthiessen’s 1972 book Blue Meridianwas a slow-burn stalk of the shark across the world chronicling that film’s making. a b c d Marks, Ben (June 29, 2012). Jaws (novel) - Wikipedia

I breezed through scene after scene that described the shark preying on swimmers (I mean, it's gotta eat, right?), though I had to throw in the towel once the people of Amity started their capture/kill efforts against the shark. All good fun in the context of science fiction. But as Pepin-Neff argues, when a film is your first exposure to a creature with an authentic counterpart, the prejudice can transfer to reality. “There is no way to look at the data on public fear of sharksand not feel like Jaws is a primary factor,” says Pepin-Neff. “Even if someone has never seen Jaws, filmmakers copy the music, story, and cinematography to capture and repeat the essence of a ‘shark movie monster’ story. This is bad for sharks because most people's only experience of [them] is what they see on the screen.” Pepin-Neff adds that “Jaws' legacy is one of tragedy for sharks—and treasure for shark research.” Peter received thousands of letters over the years from people around the world telling him that Jaws had inspired them to learn more about sharks and the ocean. It turns out Ellen even dated Matt’s much older brother David and the memories of that time of her life flood her with thoughts she’s never had before. Her infatuation with Matt creates tension between her husband and the ichthyologist. Brody suspects the worst, and with the shark in the water and the piranhas on the town counsel he doesn’t need another distraction. Shortly before the book went to press, Benchley and Congdon needed to choose a title. Benchley had many working titles during development, many of which he calls "pretentious", such as The Stillness in the Water and Leviathan Rising. Benchley regarded other ideas, such as The Jaws of Death and The Jaws of Leviathan, as "melodramatic, weird or pretentious". [3] Congdon and Benchley brainstormed about the title frequently, with the writer estimating about 125 ideas raised. [8] The novel still did not have a title until twenty minutes before production of the book. The writer discussed the problem with editor Tom Congdon at a restaurant in New York: But, personally, I don't fault him for using his imagination to write a fantastical, fictional story. That's what writers do. That's their job.

Peter Benchley - Wikipedia

"Peter Benchley: He was fascinated by the sea, but his bestselling novel tapped into a primeval fear of the deep". The Guardian . Retrieved August 18, 2008. Spielberg really did a service to this absolute buffoon of an author and thankfully, when he was done with it, the film was At first, I was enjoying the story and found it engaging. Then nothing happened. At all. The characters had annoying discussions with each other. Then we have a while away from the shark plot entirely, focusing on the sheriff’s bitch wife. Since I’m a masochist, I finished the book anyhow. Un clásico que vendió millones de copias y que la película fue una revolución del miedo. Pues contra esas mandíbulas no hay victoria y menos en un terreno en el que somos prácticamente inútiles.Humans kills sharks because they’re afraid of them, but experts say they’re actually scared of us. Thorrold said sharks swim away from boats. Anyway, all they have to do is turn the shark upside down, to cause it to go into 'tonic immobility' - a state of paralysis. Some families of skilled Killer Whales 'hunt and eat' Great Whites for their livers. A female Orca was observed holding a Great White upside down for fifteen minutes in the waters around the Farrallon Islands, off the coast of California. Although, both species have their advantages and disadvantages. Incredibly racist and so much talk about rape. I had to skim through an entire conversation of a woman having an affair and talking about her rape fantasy over dinner. a b Pangolin Pictures (June 16, 2010).
