About this deal

Propagation of waterweeds, or Elodea, is pretty straightforward. It’s one of the reasons why this plant is so popular among aquarium enthusiasts and hobbyists alike. Let’s delve into the process. Elodea is a genus of 6 species of aquatic plants often called the waterweeds described as a genus in 1803. Classified in the frog's-bit family ( Hydrocharitaceae), Elodea is native to the Americas [1] and is also widely used as aquarium vegetation and laboratory demonstrations of cellular activities. It lives in fresh water. [3] An older name for this genus is Anacharis, which serves as a common name in North America. [4] Egeria densa is able to tolerate, in laboratory conditions, a salinity of up to 8 g/l, and in its habitat in the basin of the Valdivia River, 5 g/l. Elodea consists of Elodea sprigs that are about 11 cm (4 ¼") in length. We recommend these for aquarium plants and for studies of photosynthesis, although they can be used also for cell studies. Elodea Tips are the terminal 3 to 4-cm ends cut from sprigs. We recommend these as best for cell studies.

Anacharis is believed to be one of the only aquatic plants to establish itself in the Arctic. Wild populations of anacharis have been found in the warmer geothermal waters of northern Iceland since 2013, and springs in southern Iceland since 2003. This is especially concerning given that this jump is over 1000km (about 700mi) from its previously identified extreme habitat range. The finding of invasive aquatic plants in the Arctic is an indicator that anacharis can survive nearly anywhere in the world. Gardeners and aquarium owners should be especially careful when discarding unwanted plants or clippings to safeguard their local waterways. Most pond plants, including Anacharis, can grow without soil. Decaying fish feed, fish waste, or other media can meet the nutritional requirements of these pond plants. Ponds without fishes may require a little extra nutrition, which can be derived from a liquid fertilizer formulated specifically for ponds. A downside of using soil as a medium is the resulting increase in bacterial growth around plant roots. Using soil may lead to clogging filters and muddying pond if it seeps out of the assigned area. Is elodea good for ponds? The habitat is in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Nowadays, the plant has widely spread over Eurasia, North America and Oceania. Egeria densa prefers fresh water basins with lentic or slowly flowing water. It thrives in freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, streams, and ponds. In its natural habitat, Egeria densa can be found submerged, rooted in the substrate or free-floating, depending

Another thing is, that this moisture may have a suppressing impact on growth rate of some delicate aquarium plants. Therefore, when trimming and weeding Anacharis vegetation, you should remove such a sensitive plant from the tank. Water parametersKozhevnikov, A.E., Kozhevnikov, Z.V., Kwak, M. & Lee, B.Y. (2019).
