I have been using Enterosgel for about 6 months but as it has not been a miracle cure for IBS symptoms, I have not as yet reviewed the product, allowing myself time to adjust dosage and use. While not as completely life changing as some users find, it has made a real difference to my daily life. I still have to make a few trips to the loo first thing in the day and get some bloating but things are much improved compared to before. I now take approx 20g early morning. I can go out and about much more confidently whereas before I worried prior to every outing. There were no statistically significant differences between groups for secondary outcomes, that is, the duration of diarrhoea defined as the time until the last liquid stool, percentage of patients with diarrhoea resolved from 12 hours to day 3, stool frequency or duration of nausea, vomiting, fever or abdominal pain. However, there was a trend towards shorter duration in the resolution of diarrhoea in the Enterosgel group (25.3 hours vs 38.4 hours), although this was not statistically significant (p=0.20), possibly due to being underpowered. Across millions of doses, no serious side effects have occurred when taking Enterosgel. Some people have reported constipation, but this is easily avoided by drinking enough water. The emergence of new drugs for IBS has been slow. There is a need for novel treatments, including drug-free alternatives, which are easy and safe to use in different patient groups. Currently available drug-free treatments include Enterosgel®, which is an intestinal adsorbent approved for use in patients with IBS-D and is available over-the-counter in the UK. Previous studies suggest that Enterosgel® and other intestinal adsorbents can improve diarrhoea, bloating and abdominal pain in patients with IBS-D. However, larger studies are needed to further investigate the potential benefits of Enterosgel®.

The treatments recommended for acute diarrhoea by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence guidance are fluid and nutritional management, with antidiarrhoeal (antimotility) drugs considered unnecessary and only advisable for specified groups.

My only criticism is the timings around taking it, 2 hours before or after meals is difficult and i have to plan meals around this. I’m having to wake up at 6:30am to take this so I can have breakfast a decent time and then I can take my third dosage around 3pm to be able to have dinner at decent time and go out after. If your life is ruled by irritable bowel syndrome, or other conditions that cause diarrhoea, you may find Enterosgel can transform your ability to take part in normal daily activities. Like any medical treatment Enterosgel can have a variety of side effects. Possible side effects of the gel include nausea and constipation.
