I feel that I could make a more generalized version of that comment to sum up my feelings about this story overall.

Jonathan, for his part, is more concerned as to how a piece of chewing gum got moved from one potted plant to another at the crime scene. Jonathan, Polly and the vicar go to all of the trouble to set up a meeting with the culprit in a fancy restaurant. Although still incredibly frustrating, it does at least allow Sarah Alexander’s character – whilst still unnecessarily meddling, determined that Creek avoid any case-solving – to be far less cynical and slightly expanded from the one-dimensional character of previous instalments. While it’s great to have Creek back as the awkward underdog we used to love, seeing Polly make him dispose of his most treasured possessions, literally trashes it all at the end. Much like the Christmastime it has nothing to do with, ‘Daemon’s Roost’ is a mixture of pleasures and annoyances, none of them new to the show. We do, however, get treated to a genuine red herring that fools both Creek and probably many playing along at home.

Aware of my fondness for the programme itself and an impossible crime in general, people keep asking me what I thought of the recent Jonathan Creek Christmas special ‘Daemons’ Roost’. For a show that never recovered from losing the perfect complementary construct of Caroline Quentin’s brash Maddy as a sidekick to Creek’s humble quirkiness, to end up with a partner – after several other failed attempts – who’s desperate for Creek to give up solving crimes, seemed more than a little at odds with the whole premise of the series. The detection-based scenes are well-thought out and filled with interesting deductions and fiendish schemes. Events take a twist when a wristwatch found at the scene belongs to a woman who has been kidnapped and held for ransom.Guest stars: Raquel Cassidy, Simon Thomas, Ali Bastian, Marianne Borgo, Ross Armstrong, Roy Sampson, Alice O'Connell and Paula Wilcox. Alison, the only daughter left, now grown up, is summoned to Daemon’s Roost to learn the truth about what happened to the rest of her family. Whilst Jonathan Creek might be a genius detective, he also seems like the kind of person who you might find drinking cider in an old pub on a saturday afternoon. Meanwhile Jonathan is being pursued by Patrick Tyree (Ryan Oliva) – a man he put in jail – with Polly and her friend Nina ( Jo Martin) preoccupied by a local scarecrow competition.
