Each month a selection of new experiences will be released that will help you to educate your child and prepare them with the safety skills and awareness they need for later life. Developed in partnership with speech and language advisors ICAN, our bespoke programme supports your child’s communication and language skills in nursery and at home, including supporting those with communication difficulties. Accredited by nutritionists at NHS Startwell, we take huge pride in our food credentials and ensure all our meals are nutritionally balanced. Exploring this sensory dough helps your child learn through their senses and make connections. Counting out the dough supports their early counting skills

Cooking provides many opportunities for children to use and understand mathematical language. For example, ordinal language such as “First we need the flour, next we need the cheese”. Children are able to take part in weighing and measuring and these practical activities will help children to experience what less and more, full and empty look like. You can encourage your child to predict and estimate; “How long do you think the ice lollies will need to be in the freezer before they are frozen?” or “How many more scoops of flour do you think we need to fill the cup?” Children will have many opportunities to practice counting with meaning, for example when they count out how many tablespoons of oil they need or count out paper cases in a muffin tray. Practicing these skills and hearing these terms in meaningful experiences will support children to understand them better. Delivering Excellence - we ensure all our nurseries provide a high quality of care and excellence to your children through our internal quality assurance programme. This activity focuses on fine motor development by improving the muscles in the hands, strengthening hand grip and developing wrist movement Being able to follow directions is an essential skill that children need for when they start school. Following a recipe is a great way for children to learn how to follow a set of directions to achieve a planned result. As a parent, demonstrating good role modelling and talking about the hazards we are exposed to in everyday life, supports your child in learning about their environment and the risks they need to manage as they grow. It is not about removing all hazards entirely, this is impossible, it is about teaching them about how the hazards affect them and making the right choices to control their impact.Kenny Churchill, Paralympic gold medallist, developed a gross motor movement programme in partnership with Busy Bees

Ensure there are no sharp shells or stones where you are playing and support your baby in washing their hands thoroughly after playing in the sand Physical experiences encourage children to develop their coordination skills, helping them to control their body movements to perform a task or skill. They support children in being able to use their arms and legs in unison. This is known as bilateral movement. Cross lateral movements are also supported where children are encouraged to cross their midline, for example taking their arm across to the other side of their body. Invite your child to help you make a start and finish line in your garden; with a couple of pieces of clothing, a tea towel or a piece of garden equipment. Following this, explain that we are going to take part in different races. UP and Active with Buzz is a physical programme designed specifically for Busy Bees to support children with their physical skills and development. At the centres, educators have access to a range of physical experiences they can carry out with the children, along with professional reading to support their understanding of physical development. At home, parents are able to access UP and Active experiences to further support their children's gross motor development and fitness. Below you will find a small selection of these experiences!

Early years

Strictly stars James and Ola Jordan were inspired to make spoon people with their daughter Ella as part of a Busy Bees survey into craft activities and messy play Whilst you encourage your child to explore, test their boundaries and use their imaginations they are learning about risk and how to implement effective control measures to keep themselves and others around them safe. Safety with Buzz will provide you with guidance, experiences ideas and top tips to help you do this. Sharing Best Practice Globally - we spend time immersed in our nursery settings to ensure we can share best practice globally and provide your child with the best start in life.

Cooking is a scientific activity and children are able to see the changes that happen to materials by the effects they place on them. For example, while making bread they will see that the dough will rise or when making cakes, they will see a wet mixture transform into a sponge. Pointing out these differences allows children to hear and develop new vocabulary and develop new understandings. It is important that children are offered a range of experiences to develop their physical skills which cover all elements of physical development such as gross and fine motor skills, endurance, coordination, flexibility, strength, body management skills such as balancing, locomotor skills such as running or crawling and object control such as using a bat or ball. While cooking with your child, you can help them to understand the origin of the food on their plate, for example do they know that carrots grow in the ground or that cheese is made from milk? The recipes that you will find in ‘Cooking with Buzz’ come from all over the world, providing you with the opportunity to find out about different cultures and countries as well! You could carry out the Olympic games with friends or siblings or with just your child taking part! Cooking is a very sensory experience where children have the opportunity to smell, feel and ultimately taste different ingredients. Use scientific terms such as solid and liquid and describe the textures of what you are making. Encourage the children to smell each of the ingredients they are using and use descriptive language to tell you about them. Each Busy Bees centre has had significant investment in physical equipment to encourage your child to be active.
