About this deal

A pair of assets consists of either TWO identical asset cards, or by pairing ONE asset card with ONE wild card (gold and silver) tucked behind it. The story line is simple: protect your assets in the form of baseball cards, jewelry, a classic car, and more…or the coveted gold and silver (worth a lot! I’ll likely try to do more in the future (Skull King is part of a trilogy of card games, so I’m hoping they end up bringing the other two over from Europe), but for now I’m looking at Cover Your Assets, a game about high-value stuff collection and, of course, its inevitable theft.

So, when Grandpa Beck’s Games gave us a chance to review Cover Your Assets, I was happily on board to give it a try. I think, generally, that’s Grandpa Beck’s wheelhouse, so this is another solid title in that line, I’d argue. The top set of assets in your pile is vulnerable, and can be stolen by other players if they show you a matching asset card, or wild (which are Silver and Gold cards) from their hand.

The last player to reveal a card takes, or keeps the set, along with all the cards used in the challenge, increasing its value. Since every gets assets stolen from them during the game, there’s plenty of post-game chatter about how everything turned out. Even with the three decks of cards, the game was overwhelming and not fun because it was never your turn to play.

This may go without saying, but Cover Your Assets scores very high on our “let’s play again” game meter. You can only ever attempt to steal the top set of assets from another player and only after you have placed at least one set yourself. A perfect party game for kids and adults alike, it'll have you all laughing and teasing one another all night!

I think I underestimated it a bit because of all the take-that, but my first play went so well that I had to rethink it, a bit. Now that I have been on both sides, I can honestly tell you the Pros and Cons of the game, Cover your Assets ( other games by Grandpa Beck I would highly recommend). In Cover Your Assets, players compete to become the first millionaire by building towers of matching sets made from 10 different types of asset cards (things like jewels, piggy banks, classic autos, and more).

Update: The second printing of the game changed things slightly, so I've made corrections to the player numbers in this post. There's a good deal of luck and a whole lot of stealing, but I suppose that's what it takes to become a millionaire, at least in this game. The game is primarily designed for four to six players but there are good variations for two or three players. Create stacks of assets by pairing sets of asset cards, like Piggy Banks, Cash Under the Mattress, Jewels, Classic Autos, and more. It’s funny when it does happen, because mostly the people don’t know the intense value of the thing they just nicked. The player can defend themselves by playing another card from their hand either matching the asset or a wild. You’ll also get table talk where people tell you to steal from someone else, which is generally amusing. And by more I mean, be warned, this game is so fun it may quickly go from “filler” to “holy cow, did we really just play that for 2 hours straight!
