Description

The Watch 4 features Samsung’s own Exynos W920 chipset and 1.5GB of RAM. Throughout our testing time we’ve found this to be enough power to run a variety of apps smoothly without any slowdown. This is one of the fastest smartwatches we’ve ever used. In addition to Samsung’s core apps for weather, reminders and alarms, you’ll find a couple of standout new entries here, including Google Maps and, importantly, Google’s Play Store. The latter opens up a whole range of possibilities compared to what’s possible with any recent Samsung smartwatch, with apps such as Shazam, Couch to 5K, Nike Run Club, Calm, Komoot and Telegram all available, in addition to Google essentials such as Google Fit, Google Pay and Google Keep.

Supported watches: Galaxy Watch4, Galaxy Watch3, Galaxy Watch Active2 and later released Galaxy Watch and Active models (excluding Galaxy Fit) It's also worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will probably land in or around August 2022, so you might want to consider waiting for that. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 release date and price Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Price and availability Battery time is based on our own laboratory measurements, and may vary depending on factors such as device settings, usage patterns and operating conditions.Typical value tested under Samsung laboratory condition. Actual battery life may vary depending on network environment, usage patterns, and other factors. We were sent a Bluetooth-only 46mm Watch 4 Classic for review, but whichever variant you choose, the Galaxy Watch 4 will come with the same Exynos W920 chip inside. Samsung claims this delivers a 20% boost in CPU processing speeds along with graphics rendering that’s a whopping ten times faster than the older Exynos 9110. One important thing to note is the limited compatibility of some fitness features. The ECG and blood pressure monitoring tools are only available when you connect the Galaxy Watch 4 to a Samsung smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 review - TechRadar

You’d be forgiven for being confused here. Tizen has been the focus of Samsung’s software efforts in recent years, and the software running on the Galaxy Watch 4 looks similar to it. Advanced insights from the National Sleep Foundation is only available on a smartphone paired with the Galaxy Watch4 Classic. ECG and BP feature only to be used by 22 years+. For accurate BP readings, a calibration is required every 4 weeks by BP monitor & arm cuff. Requires a Galaxy smartphone running Android 7.0 or above. Given those caveats, there's plenty to like about the watch's design. There’s a virtual rotating bezel – a returning feature from the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2– which, in conjunction with two buttons on the right-hand side, allows for easy navigation around the smartwatch’s menus. Some may miss the physical rotating bezel from the Galaxy Watch 3, but this is a good alternative.

This is a frustrating element, and it means this watch may not be the best choice for you if you don’t own a Samsung phone. Alternative devices from brands such as Garmin offer similar features, but across any phone. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4: Battery life The Galaxy Watch 4 is also Samsung’s only smartwatch in recent years that doesn’t work with iPhones at all. Apple itself is notoriously restrictive but with Samsung moving to Google’s Wear OS, you’d hope it would become more accessible, not less. The Advanced Sleep feature is for fitness and wellness purposes only and not intended for use in detection, diagnosis, treatment of any medical condition or disease.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic review: A stellar smartwatch Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic review: A stellar smartwatch

Finally, there’s the issue of battery life. Samsung’s Gear and Galaxy smartwatches once wiped the floor with Apple’s wearables in this respect, but now it’s become much more of a close-run thing. Samsung estimates the Galaxy Watch 4 will last 40 hours on average and that’s largely in keeping with what I’ve experienced in the sense that it usually lasts between 24 and 48 hours with moderate use. Both models are made of aluminum. The dimensions of the 40mm model are 40.4 x 39.3 x 9.8mm with a weight of 25.9g, while the 44mm is 44.4 x 43.3 x 9.8mm and weighs 30.3g. As for the Galaxy Watch 4, this is the best smartwatch for anyone who owns a Galaxy smartphone. If you own a different Android phone, it’s still a worthy choice for your next smartwatch, but there are caveats around the features mentioned above. For optimal reading accuracy, your Galaxy Watch4 needs to be snugly fastened to your wrist. When you are not conducting readings, you may loosen the band to provide breathing room. On balance, your watch’s band should not be fastened too tight or loose: make sure that it feels comfortable around your wrist. With the Galaxy Watch 4 series, Samsung is truly shaking things up with a new processor and Samsung-branded Wear OS software replacing the firm’s own Tizen operating system. However, while it’s a very impressive smartwatch indeed, the new Galaxy Watch is arguably more restrictive than ever. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 Classic review: What do you get for the money?
