At this point, the series could totally drop the ball one year and still be recommendable so long as that feature remains intact. That maneuver sees a wrestler diving out of the ring through the ropes to take down their opponent on the outside. Furthermore, the netcode makes the gameplay much floatier and less responsive overall – we’re far from pro players, but things just feel snappier in single player to us. The cover athlete this year is John Cena, and the game features the debut of a new 3v3 and 4v4 WarGames mode. Like last year’s standout release, the 2023 edition is another rock-solid chapter in the wrestling series’ comeback story.

Rather than telling a generic “zero-to-hero” story, the single-player story mode takes some creative narrative swings across two separate campaigns. On that note, there’s actually a lot more single player content to explore in the Ultimate Team-esque MyTeam mode this year, with the addition of the high-octane Clutch Time. What drives me up a wall though, is that the mode still asks players to execute specific moves without showing prompts on screen. The idea is that you only get three of these per possession, meaning you can’t spam your opponent into submission. The fan-favorite action-packed WarGames makes its debut in WWE 2K23 and delivers heart-pounding 3v3 and 4v4 multiplayer mayhem inside two side-by-side rings, surrounded by a double-steel cage!The same thing I said last year holds true here: singles matches are the best and things get progressively worse the more bodies that enter the ring.
