Description

Kaufmann and Kamil later meet during the Israeli-Lebanese conflict in the 1960s, which sees countless atrocities on both sides. By the end of the story, we have witnessed the transformation of an innocent and idealistic boy into a highly destructive and brainwashed Nazi enforcer. It is just a damn good story, and an illustration of the potential of graphic novels to portray stories of equal nuance and power as prose. Combine that with a bit of a boring cast and a series of events that leave no lasting impression and you have this comic.

It is a story with the grand sweep of myth, something that seems to rise from the unconsciousness, as told through a Japanese observer. This is one of the most stunning aspects of the story, not often explored honestly in literature, anymore. I’m not going to list the qualities that makes the main character of any story sympathetic, but the one quality you wouldn’t expect to see would be a tendency to sexually assault women.

The story is played back for you by reporter Toge, who wields information given to him by a Jewish student that could destroy Hitler's credentials and topple the Aryan empire. Quite simply put, it is charged through with suspense and I could not put it down for long before picking it up again. I just do not believe that it succeeds in reaching the goals it sets for itself and think that it is rather underwhelming and disappointing in that regard.

Sohei Toge ( 峠 草平, Tōge Sōhei ): A Japanese reporter sent to Germany to cover the 1936 Olympics only to find his younger brother murdered.

This book has been on my to-read list for a long time, and I finally decided to tackle it, due largely to my and Shea's decision to discuss this book (along with Muzuki's Hitler) for the November manga episode of the podcast. Kaufmann manages to find favor with the Führer himself, and gets a position serving him -- giving him some insight into Hitler's troubled mind (and also confirming that the big, dark secret about the Führer is true).

Upon arriving, he finds that his younger brother, who has been studying in Germany as an international student, has been murdered and had connections with Communist organisations. also released this series in 2012 under the title Message to Adolfin a two-volume hardcover edition. Tezuka's Adolf is about two Japanese boys named Adolfs (and also Hitler), one boy Japanese/German whose father is a German Nazi sympathizer, and this boy gets sent to Germany to be a Hitler Youth. Though mostly in-directly affecting to the characters, it is still helpful to show how the world is developing around them.
