Description

CHEMetrics offers ammonia testing kits using two different methods: Direct Nesslerization and Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol (HBA). Visual and instrumental ammonia testing kit formats that span low and high measurement ranges are offered. Test results for visual test kits use color comparators for analysis while instrumental kits rely on CHEMetrics direct-readout photometers or spectrophotometers capable of accepting a 13-mm diameter round cell The Hanna Instruments-3824 ammonia test kit determines the ammonia concentration in water in several easy steps. The Nessler reagent reacts with ammonia, under strong alkaline conditions, to form a yellow coloured complex. Ammonia is formed naturally as a product of the microbiological decay of nitrogenous organic matter (animal and plant protein). It can also be produced for use in fertilizers, or for use in the production of plastics, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals. CHEMetrics offers test kits for the determination of Ammonia in aqueous solutions employing the well-known Nessler reagent to deliver sensitivity and accuracy within two minutes or less, as well as kits employing the Hydroxybenzyl Alcohol (HBA) method which offers similar sensitivity without generating any mercury-containing waste. Ammonia concentrations are routinely measured in wastewater effluent, drinking water, surface water and seawater. This Spectroquant® Ammonium Reagent Test allows the cyanide-free quantification of ammonium in wastewater, groundwater, surface water, and seawater. Typically, ammonium enters water sources as runoff from fertilized agricultural areas and enhanced levels are important indicators for fecal pollution.

This kit therefore measures total ammonium in solution. At physiological pH, nearly all ammonia will exist as ammonium in solution. Based on CHEMetrics patented Self-Filling Reagent Ampoule technology. Premixed. Premeasured. Precise. Each kit contains 30 tests. Visual and instrumental ammonia testing kit formats span low and high measurement ranges. CHEMets® and VACUettes® visual test kits use colour comparators for analysis while Vacu-vials® instrumental kits rely on CHEMetrics direct-readout photometers or spectrophotometers capable of accepting a 13-mm diameter round cell. CHEMets and VACUettes: 5 month limit on supply is recommended, however refrigeration can extend shelf-life. Ammonia is toxic to aquatic life, and the aquaculture industry frequently measures and controls its concentration to keep fish and shellfish alive. Regulatory requirements mandate ammonia testing and monitoring for diverse industries to protect downstream aquatic environments. Examples include wastewater, landfill, acid mine drainage and animal feeding operations where ammonia is measured in effluent, leachate, and unintended discharges. Environmental groups often test for ammonia in water bodies as part of their monitoring program to help them assess trends associated with other aquatic health indicators.

Avoid getting the contents of the test tube on your skin. P303 + P361 + P353: IF ON SKIN (or hair): Take off immediately all contaminated clothing. Rinse skin with water.

Total ammonia is the sum of all ammonia nitrogen present in the form of monochloramine (NH 2Cl), other chloramines, ammonium ion (NH 4 +), and molecular ammonia (NH 3). This parameter may serve as a primary or secondary verification to maintain the chloramination process under control. Water pH is an essential component of your aquarium’s water quality and influences all living animals in your system. For testing pH, you can use a liquid test kit or an electronic probe. Electronic probes can be more accurate if calibrated properly but are more expensive than their liquid counterparts. Due to this, we recommend using the API pH Test Kit. It comes with a testing vial, testing solution, color card, and a glass vial with a snap-tight cap to prevent messes. The entire kit can be used for around 250 tests and accurately tests pH within a 6.0 to 7.6 range. This is ideal for freshwater tanks, so if you have a saltwater tank (or a freshwater tank with a higher optimal pH range), you will need to look for another product, like the API High Range pH Test Kit. Q: My Ammonia 2 reagent has turned blue, is it still okay to use? A: Our Ammonia 2 reagent can take on a blue colour with time, but it does not affect the performance or results of the test. As long as the test kit is still within date, you can be confident in the reliability of the results it produces. In some disinfection processes, ammonia is intentionally combined with chlorine to produce monochloramine. Though free chorine is a more powerful disinfectant, monochloramine (bonded ammonia and chlorine) has a stronger residual so it remains in the distribution system longer, thus ensuring disinfection is maintained all the way to the tap. Furthermore, chloramines react less intensely with various impurities in raw water, particularly organic substances, thus minimizing the formation of some carcinogenic disinfection by-products (DBP). To optimize the chloramination process, it is important to monitor the formation of the target disinfectant species, while preventing the formation of less desirable dichloramine or trichloramine (nitrogen trichloride). Monochloramine testing is used together with a free ammonia determination to ensure formation of the right disinfectant and reduce raw material costs by preventing the overfeeding of chlorine and/or ammonia.

Both the Nessler and salicylate methods are based on a reaction with molecular ammonia in a basic solution. If the original sample contained ammonium ions, the basic reagents would convert it to molecular ammonia and then it will react and contribute to the final test result. However, these simple ammonia tests do not include the ammonia that is in organically bonded amino groups. A true total ammonia test would include chloramines and require heating the sample in an acidic solution to digest the organic ammonia.Ammonia in groundwater is normal, due to microbiological processes. However, the presence of ammonia nitrogen in surface water usually indicates domestic pollution. Excess ammonia can damage vegetation and is incredibly toxic to aquatic life, especially at elevated pH and temperature levels. Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Electroplating > Ammonium Analytics and Sample Preparation > Test Kits and Photometric Methods > Areas of Application > Waste Water > Ammonium Since it can test for 2 to 14 mg/L, it’s a great option for looking at lower oxygen levels, which can happen as tank temperatures warm or equipment is being swapped out. While it may seem like a lower-range test kit, even if you maxout the test, your levels are still safe. Overall, this is a reliable option that’s readily available in many local pet stores and online retailers. The chemical equation that drives the relationship between ammonia and ammonium is: NH3 + H2O ↔ NH4+ + OH- When the concentration of ammonia is high enough, it can alter the smell and taste of water. In industrial applications, high concentrations of ammonia can cause corrosion in pipes. If any buffer used in the experiment has ammonium salt (e.g. NH4Cl), the buffer must be used to assay how much ammonium is in it. This number can be subtracted from the cells + buffer number to know how much ammonium is in the cells.
