The film is decidedly low budget and simply made, but benefits from a good script and a stellar cast.

Diggstown (known as Midnight Sting in the UK and Ireland), is a 1992 American sports comedy-drama film directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Steven McKay, based on the 1978 novel The Diggstown Ringers by Leonard Wise.

Ex-con Gabriel Caine and partner Fitz cook up a plan to take rich Diggstown resident John Gillon for all he’s worth. Gillon has lost everything, leading Caine to correct him with an admonishment: "Actually, I believe it goes: Never con a con-man, especially one who's better than you are. Believing himself to also be a con man and smarter than most, it’s almost delightful to see him fail. His softer side only comes out when he’s trying to protect his son (Jim Caviezel) but even then his actions only help to showcase his flaws. For con artist Gabriel Caine (Woods), Diggstown is the promised land, legendary for its high-stakes boxing matches that attract high-rollers from miles around. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Gabriel Caine ( James Woods), a con man, is released from prison in Winfield, Georgia and immediately gets to work on his next scam. The film is a little patchy, it starts off quite light hearted and played for laughs, and indeed there is an imaginative fart gag that`s worth waiting for. It`s also an inspired bit of casting to have Bruce Dern as the greedy and cold-blooded John Gillon, an archetypal Hollywood bad guy if ever there was one. Caine, not wanting to see his friend die, attempts to throw in the towel, but Palmer catches it and throws it back. It's far from a sure thing, though, since Gabe's fighter is "Honey" Roy Palmer (Gossett), a cranky, over-the-hill 48-year-old who has just come out of retirement. This knocks the spots off 99% of films coming out at the moment and the fact that it has taken 12 years to come out on DVD is a disgrace! There are a few plot holes that could do with patching and the fight sequences come straight from the Rocky School of boxing.

In 'Midnight Sting' (1992), ex-con Gabriel Caine (James Wood) heads for Diggstown, a place where unofficial boxing matches are held for big prize money. Caine discovers that Gillon's treachery (and his bank account) goes deeper than Diggstown people know. The golden age of Hollywood is long gone now, but that chase for an audience still goes on, and it helps if a film does more than one thing.Der frisch aus dem Knast gekommene Kunstfälscher Gabriel Caine (James Woods) wettet mit dem reichsten Mann von Diggstown John Gillon (Bruce Dern), dass der 48 jährige Boxer Roy Palmer (Louis Gosett Jr. However, the story does take a sinister turn that is a little unexpected given the initially frivolous nature of the script. It`s a good reason why early Hollywood films would have a bit of everything thrown in, action, adventure, romance, as well as a little singing and dancing. Roy Palmer was leaning against the ropes between each round in the first few fights; fighters don't do that, since it makes the arm muscles tense and sore.
