I did find that if I steadied myself properly that this claim is achievable with some regularity, but certainly not all of the time. Obviously, the 55-300 is not a good candidate for any kind of indoor/low-light photography, unless flashes are used. Another important thing to note is that the front part of the lens does not seem to wobble when the lens is fully extended (the 18-200mm is notorious for that). A telephoto lens could be the sharpest lens in the world, but if it cannot properly acquire focus, it is as good as useless.

I don't know anything about the merits of AF-P versus AF-S, but I would assume AF-P would be superior to justify the trade-offs above. g., shooting through mountain haze at long distances, or on other low-contrast subjects, like a band of all-black howler monkeys we ran into in Panama, last month. Either they could choose a lens covering the popular 70-300mm range designed to cover a full frame sensor, but this would leave a gap between 55mm and 70mm, or they could purchase a superzoom lens covering up to 300mm, but this would often result in a slower maximum aperture at 300mm and compromised optical quality. I don’t know what Nikon was thinking when they designed the lens – what kind of a DX shooter would want this monstrosity? More positively, the VR system proved effective in steadying the viewfinder image and was also, like the AF system, almost silent in use. It balances perfectly on any standard-size Nikon DSLR I attached it to, whether it was the Nikon Df, D750 or the D810 – its weight is distributed evenly across the lens and it does not feel front-heavy like some of the telephoto and super-telephoto lenses. Thanks to the popular demand of the 18-200mm and the full-frame Nikon 28-300mm VR lenses, Nikon decided to add another superzoom to the DX line. I have been using the Nikon 300mm f/4D lens for over 6 years now and have been very pleased with the results.

Now here is where things start getting interesting for the 55-300mm – it performs sharper not only wide open, but also stopped down to f/8. While autofocus motor speed (a lens characteristic) can affect whether or not moving object tracking is lost, the body's AF tracking is the overwhelming controlling factor. Tamron doesn't offer a comparable telephoto zoom with image stabilization; its closest offering in the same range would be the 55-200 ƒ/4.
