Thoughts aren't facts, they're judgements, theories, memories, predictions, and interpretations about the future. I had no interest in being a public person or being on social media – it was really about sharing that information. The basic structure of this book goes: I won’t tell you to (insert common self help advice) like other self help books. If you take anyone and you start messing around with their core defences, things such as sleep, routine, social connection, nutrition and exercise, then that person will become vulnerable to both physical and mental health problems. It is divided into main parts -each discussing a certain topic- with multiple chapters in each part.

Has Nobody Told Me This Before?: Smith, Dr. Julie Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before?: Smith, Dr. Julie

Emotional reasoning is a thought bias that leads us to use what we feel as evidence for something to be true, even when there might be plenty of evidence to suggest otherwise. There are some great points and things that resonated with me and I would still recommend it, especially to self help rookies or people struggling right now. Describes a book or dust jacket that does show some signs of wear on either the binding, dust jacket or pages. Julie Smith's eloquent and enlightening guide is an invaluable resource, a beacon of empowerment capable of irrevocably transforming lives. Summary: I enjoyed the book and thought it was helpful at the same time which is what I am looking for when I am reading a non-fiction book. There is a few minus points for me though as I listen to these types of books to make myself motivated. You do a lot of talking and working out your problems, but you also learn a little bit about how your mind works, how you can influence your mood and your emotional state and how then you can affect your day-to-day mental health. it was recommended to me with a note that you probably know the theory, but it doesn’t hurt revisiting it - and that's exactly why I'd recommend it further, there's nothing groundbreaking, especially with a background in psychology, but it's well written and offers some insightful angles into this crazy hazy experience of being human. I think more people are starting to realise that now and that’s helping to tackle the stigma around mental health. This is life insight that everyone needs to hear and it’s written in such a way that it’s easy to understand. If you can notice a thought for what it is – a biased guess, and label it as such, then … that is one way of holding the thought at arm’s length. This book accomplishes both of these things and there are actual tools and ideas which can be put to use by those who need some help with emotional issues. If you have that standard for yourself, as soon as negative thoughts start to appear that you can’t control, you start to feel like you’re failing or that you’re not positive enough. Further down the page, Smith adds, “Here are a few of the thought biases that commonly occur when we are feeling anxious:” She lists some common kinds of biased thoughts and discusses them a bit.
